    best alarm clocks??

Considering this is CPF, there is always the DIY option. This is a real fire alarm bell clock, complete with schematics and instructions. If that is not enough to wake you, the interface circuit may be adapted to operate this product.

    Computerized Appliances

Hi jtr, I have to disagree with much of this! I have no need for my simple mechanical appliances to be susceptible to power spikes and thus require surge protection or reboots. Many such appliances contain large electric motors and contact switches that generate their own large voltage spikes...

    Orange Surefire G2

You do realize that this is Rit, which is used for dyeing clothes (including nylon ones), and if the color stained other things like skin or rubbed off (nylon clothing was introduced in 1940) we'd have heard about it 60+ years ago?;) AFAIK Nitrolon is just fiberglass reinforced nylon, so...

Alky AA stuck in a piece I really want to save

What's the rush, that requires hammers and makes "3 freakin' hours" such a long time? People in the rust belt know you spray PB Blaster (or Kroil, or GM heat riser lube) on the stuck part every day for a week before you even try to budge things, or they'll snap off. The plastic and aluminum...

    How about 18V bulbs?

Well if you want more output on 5 cells the most efficient option would be one of the 12v Osram Halostar IRC bulbs. What is needed is a ~12v, 2000hr bulb that can tolerate 18-21v for about 10 hours. There are lots of bipin and MR bulbs in that category but I don't know of any PR ones (perhaps...

Man, car batteries don't last very long

Johnson Controls bought the battery division of Delphi (who make AC Delco batteries) in 2006. Exide is the largest auto battery company in the US, and I believe they are fully capable of manufacturing any level of quality parts, except their customers tend to consider only price and order just...

Man, car batteries don't last very long

A lot of it depends on the quality of the battery. Environment (extreme hot or cold) and use (they don't like to be deep cycled) are important factors but better made batteries simply last longer under those same conditions. Virtually all car batteries sold in the US are manufactured by three...

    Colour temperature in HID lamps

Those "upmarket" cars flash blue with 4200k bulbs because of the mentioned fringe color shift on the very edges of the beam from the projector lenses they use. If you look straight at them they aren't blue. They don't shine blue light. They only look blue for an instant as you drive past...

    Jet Cars

Any list of these must include this one. "It's a little windy inside."

    Using Plasti-dip / Plasti-cote

It's available in places that sell sandblasting or tumbling media, or soapmaking supplies. I mix it right into the whole can because I prefer the highly textured finish over the shiny vinyl look on just about everything. And it hides flaws/scratches in the coating better too.

    Using Plasti-dip / Plasti-cote

Plasti-dip seems to work best (at least on tool handles) when mixed as 3 parts Plasti-dip with 1 part pumice grit. The result is very similar to the grippy handles on current Craftsman pliers.

I Killed an Incandecant (Tapping Bulbs)

Most likely, the long filament broke and short circuited so it was shorter. I see this on unfrosted household incans where it is often even possible to temporarily resurrect a burned-out bulb by carefully rotating it until the ends of the broken filament touch again somewhere. Kind of like...

    EX10 (1xCR123A) and D10 (1xAA) Part 6

Re: A couple of issues on Nitecore D10 The not always ramping with the second press is not normal, assuming the light is first set at a middle level. All of them have this ramping problem after you use the shortcuts: if you use the shortcut to high after last ramping high toward low, it will...
