How much can an LED vary in brightness?

So there seems to be a sort of "matrix" of conditions that ultimately affect what a flash light will produce. You're saying its a combination of driver/LED paring along with the resulting physical environment that determines both efficiency and brightness? (heat@current?) So now I wonder just...

How much can an LED vary in brightness?

I'm more than a little confused. I was shopping for a budget 1x18650 XM-L flashlight and discovered dozens of models that had various lumen ratings. Some were listed as low as 300 while others boasted as much as 800. What I want to know is: Doesn't the manufacturer have an official standard of...

Undocumented characteristics of older NiMH "AA" - used in regulated LD 20 circuit

Undocumented characteristics of older NiMH "AA" - used in regulated LD 20 circuit I have never seen this mentioned and I don't know if anyone has experienced this type of battery output from worn NiMH cells. I have an Fenix LD20 that fails to run in "200 lumen turbo mode" when I use my older...

    Li-ion rechargeable storing at 40% charge = ? Volts

I don't mean any disrespect - but isn't thread making assumptions about perfection of battery chemistry, testing equipment, charging rates etc? I would guess there is a reasoning in attempting to find an optimal "resting charge" for batteries but wonder whether whatever minute changes is...

    Fenix HP11 review?

Can the HP11's head straps be taken away from the head lamp and battery? I am thinking of getting an HP11 - but I would like the option of using a customized battery pack strap as well as head lamp mount.

Helemt mounting - for head lamps not specific bicycling

I want to know if anyone has tips for mounting head lamps with power supplies on their head bands. I have several head lamps - an LED Lenser as well as Energizer cheapy. I am interested in getting the Fenix HP11 - it used 4xAA right on it's head band. Anyway - I'm having a hard time deciding...

Do cells discharge differently depending on position in carrier?

I don't know if I am imagining this or if it is a "fluke" or a real pattern. It seems like that when I use two-cell flashlights that the cell closest to the light head discharges more than the other cell in the carrier. (two cells in series) Has anyone else noted this behavior - I've seen it...

Solarforce M8 -no voltage regulation when using single cell

Yeah - I figured there is no way to build a circuit that would account for two different voltages. FYI - it would appear the low cut-off voltage for two cell format is around six volts. (at least for the 2300mA cells I used - ~3V each - lights out)

Solarforce M8 -no voltage regulation when using single cell

I just got a Solarforce M8. It comes with an extension tube and an extra simple on off tactical switch. When using the extension tube and two by 18650 cells the light maintains full brightness until failing when voltage falls to somewhere around 6 volts. If I use a single 18650 cell the light...

    Anyone received a TK41 RECENTLY?

I got a TK41 about two months ago from Light Junction. Mine has no button issues after many hours of use. The emitter appears perfectly centered. However, compared to XM-L emitters used in my Jet beam and Solarforce the TK41 seems slightly green. As far as I know they are supposed to be...

LED technology, how far can/will it go?

One of the improvements to LED fabrication that could make a difference in flashlight efficiency would be producing "curved" wafer emitters. Like the OLED fabrication - only different in the idea that these "curved emitters" would have only one set of poles - as a single LED. But follow along...

Review of Fenix TK41, with measurements and outdoor beamshots

I double checked the "throw" distance test i previously posted about. The TK41 will indeed light up a reflective sign a mile away. However, I do want to inform readers that most any light probably will do nearly the same. I tested the TK41 at the "medium" setting and found that there was a hint...

JetBeam Backup BC40 (XM-L) High-Output Review: RUNTIMES, BEAMSHOTS, and more!

I checked a BC40 and found it to be defective. Tail cap switch did not work - bezel switch felt like metal against metal. I thought the "QC card" supplied in the light packaging must have to be a sarcastic joke. Perhaps the item I received was built on a Monday morning shift. The BC 40...

Review of Fenix TK41, with measurements and outdoor beamshots

All lights that use a reflector will produce an uneven pattern at some point. The only way this could be avoided would be to have the reflector "meet" the very edge of the LED where light is generated, and even then you might get some uneven intensity. I made my own mount out inner tube rubber...

    Which 800+ 2x18650 light for camping ??

I just received a BC40 and the tail cap switch was defective out of the box. The bezel switch felt sluggish and gritty. I am returning it, and doubt I will try any Jetbeam products in the future. There is simply no way this unit went through any "QC" check. I own a Quark and two Fenix units and...
