    IIHS test of headlamp performance

Ironically, his headlights seem to do a better job shedding light on his mindset than they do on the road. Go figure.

    IIHS test of headlamp performance

Sad! No wonder truck drivers are always monkeying around with their headlights and ill-advised modifications - in spite of their natural mounting height advantage, they still can't get the job done. On some of these models, too, the high beams are darned near useless.

    Phillips X-treme Vision Gen2?

Would anyone happen to know how the Phillips X-tremeVision gen2 D4S (http://www.philips.co.za/c-p/42402XV2S1/xenon-x-tremevision-gen2-xenon-car-headlight-bulb) compares to the Osram Xenarc Night Breaker Unlimited D4S...

Osram has sold its lighting division

Yikes! I'm beginning to think that I should get a new pair of Xenarc Night Breaker Unlimiteds now before the new management has its chance to foul things up.

Osram Xenarc Night Breaker Unlimited HIDs

Thanks for the advice, guys - I'll definitely put the Osram HIDs on my list for preventive replacement a couple years down the road. (Here's hoping Koito comes out with those novel HIDs in D4S format, too!) I just want to say that I really appreciate the opportunity to get some more reliable...

Osram Xenarc Night Breaker Unlimited HIDs

Wonderful - I see that the source I found turned out to be good. I don't mind the idea of replacing on a preventive-maintenance basis, so long as it is along a sane schedule. Would you care to issue a recommendation or at least some guidance as to how frequently they should be replaced on a...

Osram Xenarc Night Breaker Unlimited HIDs

Hello again! I'm just wondering if anyone on this website will have heard of these products. Osram claims that they offer 70% more light, and up to a 20m longer beam, than a standard Xenon lamp. (The bulbs also claim to be 5% whiter, but I have read enough around here to know that this is a...

    IIHS test of headlamp performance

Virgil, Do you have any opinion on the design of the test, its results, or its implications for cars in the future? Given what you've written on this subject in the past, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

    IIHS test of headlamp performance

Some of the results on this test were surprising - particularly from the perspectives that 1) a car's upgraded headlights should be better than its base headlights and 2) that a more expensive car should generally have better headlights than a less expensive car. For example, the basic halogen...

NHTSA proposes amber turn signals, better low beams, auto beam switching

A few comments: In general, I was unimpressed by Ford and GM's perspective that new technologies designed to prevent collisions somehow rendered the need for amber turn signals less pressing. If CIB, DBS and FCW technologies are really that good, why have turn or brake signals at all...

Koito and Toyota fans, take note!

Oh, of course not. The difference is that, at least as far as I am aware, LED headlamp assemblies tend to be integrated units where the diodes are built into the assembly and replaced at the same time. Halogens, of course, are typically replaced separately. The point I'm getting at is twofold...

Koito and Toyota fans, take note!

Not to put too fine of a point on it, but is Toyota one of the firms that generally specifies a good sort of polycarbonate for their lens that isn't going to yellow up and become largely useless in no time flat? This is one of my biggest fears with LED headlamps, as their superior lifespan...

2015 Subaru lighting - Forester vs. Outback HID options (also D2S vs D4S)

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you folks yet. I wasn't able to make my first appointment since I needed my car that day and they only scheduled by the day rather than the by the hour. I haven't forgotten and still intend to have this looked at.

2015 Subaru lighting - Forester vs. Outback HID options (also D2S vs D4S)

What!? Judging from the price I was quoted (and which was consistent from others I heard from, since I contacted multiple garages), it's looking more like 1/2 hour. I can't imagine why it would take four or five hours to aim headlights. Sounds to me like they just don't want to do it.

2015 Subaru lighting - Forester vs. Outback HID options (also D2S vs D4S)

Alright. I was able to find a garage that was properly equipped and willing to do the work. I'll get it done and, in case anyone's curious, report back.
