Eggzactly, Paul. Leaving the "eye candy" issue aside, this represents one of the earliest public attempts at wearable LEDs for the masses.

EarthLED has a issue with their SKU database. The majority of the bulbs are listed as suitable for enclosed fixtures but when you check the Datasheet it states the SKU is not suitable for enclosed fixtures. I checked several SKUs last night and meant to Email EarthLED but never got around to it.
What type of diffuser panel(if any) is currently installed? Have you looked at changing the diffuser panels to something that creates less glare? There are a ton of options in the diffuser panel space.

Additionally, the OP mentioned the bulb failed in a ceiling fixture. If this fixture was even partially enclosed, I would attribute the failure to high temperatures within the fixture.
