I have one and use it often. Used it for several camp seasons. It is bright as heck - great for car camping. Never found the mantle installation to be a problem - install out of the wind. If you use regular auto gas make sure you keep an extra generator in your gear. Can clog with use. White gas...
Old Kel-lite 2C aluminum black - maybe before Maglite? One of those old Eveready chrome flashlights with a push/slide button switch. A chrome 4D light, with a handle stem you could raise up with a red flashing light. Sanyo Cadnica from Japan, 2 bulb, clear and red lens, plug in rechargeable...
Re: PLEASE HELP! Coleman NorthStar Dual Fuel InstaStart Lantern Flickers
Feel your pain. Had this problem a couple of years ago with my NorthStar - although white gas only. Changed the generator. Worked fine after that. Maybe because your lantern is new, you could return it.
Good luck.
Thanks LanternLover for starting this thread.
I have 2 of these. On lantern mode, very adequate for a small room such as a bathroom. It's a notch down in brightness when compared to my Rayovac 300. Glary if this is a concern to you. Hanger is on the base for tent hanging. 2 brightness...
I have the Coleman Hi Tech. I also have the Rayovac 300 lumen. The Coleman is taller and light more glary. But able to turn down the Coleman to dim may be a plus for a nightlight in a tent. The 4d removable battery holder and dial for brightness are convenient. Hard for me to tell which is...
I have this Coleman but without the rechargeable battery pack - using D batteries. Good light, no complaints:

Coleman has come out with some new lights with rechargeable battery packs. Cool...
Tend to agree with the folks who like this one. Mine came today. Bigger than I thought but the heft is comforting. Like the metal head. The interface is different but good with me. Don't really notice the donut hole on mine. Only get this if you and battery holders can coexist. Oh yeah...
The Coleman recommended by Maskman is very good. I have one and it works well, brightness adjustable but a little heavy and bulky. The other one I would recommend is the Coleman 4D XPS High Tech. I have 2 of them - they're bright and a convenient size...
Oh My!
Stumbled across this. Didn't know so many people from Hawaii and friends were hanging out here. Aloha from Aliamanu!
I lit up my house with 3 Rayovac (3D) Extremes during the beeg black-out. They were the "bomb." Haven't find a local store yet. Got mine at Amazon and Battery...
Aloha Super Dave:
I was in the same Oahu black-out a stone's throw from you.
Hayaku 88 is spot-on recommending the Rayovac Sportsman Extreme. Battery Junction and Amazon are two sources I know of but there are more (look for USPS shipping - cheaper). The Rayovacs lighted up well during the...
One more source:

This is from Batteries and Butter. About 30 bucks plus 10 for USPS air shipping. Arrived in about a week.
Quick eyeball test:
Put the Rayovac SE3dln against my 8D Coleman Cree Lantern. To my older eyeballs it seems slightly brighter. It claims to run 72 hours high/ 150 hours low versus the Coleman claim of 35 hours high/ 50 hours low. 3D batteries versus 8D on the Coleman. Of course much lighter...
Good review Phaserburn. I see in another post you have the Brunton Polaris. Did you have a chance to compare them yet?
I was about to order the Rayovac but shipping to my neck of the woods is about as much as the lantern itself. Have to wait for a USPS shipper.
