I thought Malkoff advised against using a rechargeable battery in their MDC 123 flashlights.

This isn't scientific based....the 2AA form-factor is my favorite Malkoff. It's like a mini baton.
I like pairing the CR123 form factor with a throw head. Tiny but mighty...even if it's just for 10 mins.

If I had to choose it would be the 2AA since you aren't carrying it and batteries are everywhere.
Bigger doesn't have a drawback for you.

I don't think 123A cells are going anywhere soon, like in the next 30 years easy. If anything they are becoming more common.
100% agree! Years ago, I always had issues finding bulk CR123s and had to buy singles from camera shops for crazy prices. Like $6-8 for each cell. Now, there are at least a dozen places near me selling 12 pack Surefire and Streamight CR123s. Grabbed a Surefire 12 pack a week ago for $18 from a shop near me.
