I was at an estate sale today with the better half and saw this old metal light for $1 and I had to buy it. I used to camp in the back yard with my buddies and skulk in the woods with one of these. It uses 2 D cells and I would like to update it with and LED bulb. I have some adapter things that will take 3 AAs replacing a single D cell. What's a good LED replacement? Also what to use to clean contacts, springs etc?

Nite Ize 55 lumen LED drop-ins are good, you can get them at home depot.

I use TarnX and q-tips to clean contacts and the spring. If the spring is rusty I use a small piece of sand paper. Many here use a product called Deoxit-Gold.

If you have a digital volt meter you can set it for checking ohms, turn on the beep function then using the positive and negative probes touch the body with one then touch "dirty" points and clean until that part beeps. I have also found that if you keep cleaning you will see the ohms number get lower. As that occurs you'll notice the bulb burns brighter due to less resistance.

Welcome to cpf.
