Features that would make me buy another FourSevens light

Now that the www.cpfmarketplace.com forum seems
to be inactive, I am interested in seeing a thread
about requested features for FourSevens lights, since
FourSevens seems to read the posts in this forum.

Here are some new features that would make
me buy newer versions of the lights that
I already have:

A Preon Penlight with an increased lumen count
in its highest mode.

A Preon Penlight in titanium.

A MMR-X with an increased lumen count
in its highest mode.

A MMR-X in titanium (I would be interested
in seeing how much it would weigh in comparison
to the aluminum version).

A waterproof touchscreen interface (similar to
a smartphone screen) embedded to the side of a MMR-X
(similar in size to a iPod Nano, for example),
that would allow you to change modes and
to see the remaining battery charge (and
maybe even a time estimate of the remaining
battery life in the current mode). An intuitive
and visual touch interface would make the
MMR-X an easier gift to give to non-flashoholic
recipients. Maybe the USB charging cable could also
serve the purpose of a data cable to periodically
upgrade the software of the flashlight.
If the touchscreen interface had an Android
operating system and a way to upload your own
apps, then FourSevens could have its own community
of developers that would customize and create
applications for the flashlight.

I was always intrigued by their lights, but never pulled the trigger. My list of must haves has grown to 3 things:

1. Neutral white option
2. Neutral white option
3. Neutral white option

In addition to what mark said...
1)neutral white - High CRI!
2)super long running super compact single 18650 running light, variable .5 - 200 lms with ~100k lux (not sure if feasible) with full knurling and user replaceble end attachments. Also, potted electronics and a more robust tail switch design. Sounds like Im wandering into custom territory lol...oh, and Id like one made of "W"

Another here one asking for NW. And it would be nice if you'd declare the brightness and tint bins used.

I'll also add:

6. The old Quark interface, or at least bring back the "high" mode on the new Quarks. Who thought removing "high" was a good idea?!?!??
7. Also, neutral white would be nice.

I would want programmability or infinite adjustment knob on a pocket sized flashlight with a clip. 1.5 amp max. XP-L high intensity neutral 4500k - 5000k.

I have noticed in electronics stores that there
are many portable cell phone chargers that have
a dual function as a flashlight. In other words,
the cell phone chargers have a flashlight and
an on/off switch built into them. Since many
dedicated flashlights already contain powerful
rechargeable batteries, it would be interesting
for FourSevens to have a similar function:
a dedicated flashlight that can charge a cell phone. They
should patent it so that other flashlight companies
cannot stop them from implementing it in the future.
Since the MMR-X already has a micro USB socket
to accept a power cable, it would be interesting
to make the MMR-X capable of charging a cell phone.
For example, maybe a bi-directional micro USB to
micro USB cable could be included with the MMR-X,
and if you connect a cell phone to the MMR-X, the
MMR-X automatically transfers its charge to the
cell phone (or a hardware switch on the MMR-X can
activate this feature). Has anyone tested a MMR-X
to see if it already has this capability? For
example, if a fully charged MMR-X is connected to
a cell phone, will it charge the cell phone?
Cell phone charging capabilities on an MMR-X
would definitely make me buy an upgraded MMR-X.
And if the capability already exists, it should
be advertised on the MMR-X product page.

If an MMR-X had a smartphone/iPod-like touchscreen
interface embedded on its side, it would be
interesting if it implemented a sliding dimmer
switch to select a precise level of brightness.
The touchscreen interface would also have the
advantage of being able to show you the instruction
booklet in electronic form. The touchscreen
interface could also allow you to select different
languages for the user interface.

It would also be interesting to have a flashlight
that could remember Morse code patterns, and
to repeat them (as a variation of the regular
beacon mode). With a touchscreen interface,
maybe the Morse code alphabet could be made
visible to the user, so that people not familiar
with Morse code could spell the message that
they want to send, and the flashlight would
translate it into a repeating Morse code
message beacon. That would allow emergency
responders to determine if the beacon holder
actually wants to be found by them. Even without
a touchscreen interface, it would be possible
to implement a pattern-recognition feature in
a flashlight. There are smartphone apps that
implement a Morse code beacon, but I have not
seen the feature on a dedicated flashlight.

And add a light-saber function. I want a red light-saber. Double-bladed, even better.

Possible bezel/tailcap ideas for the MMR-X:

One possible optional accessory would be an extended
tailcap for the MMR-X that is flush with the
tactical/momentary on/off switch, so that you
could combine the ability to stand the light on
its end with the momentary on/off switch. I
would buy this.

Another possible optional accessory would be a
flat bezel made of transparent plastic (or
regular metal with non-tactical
micro-crenulations) so that you can see whether
or not the light is on, when you stand the
light up on its reflector end. The length of
the bezel would not need to be increased (in
other words, it would not need to protrude
from the reflector further than it already
does). An alternative to transparent plastic
would be glow-in-the-dark (phosphorescent)
plastic, since it would be able to let
you find the flashlight in the dark when it
is switched off. The glow-in-the-dark
plastic would also be translucent enough to
allow you to determine if a flashlight is
powered on when it is standing on its head.

I use my bigger lights rather seldom nowadays. It is because small lights are pretty powerful nowadays and they are convenient to carry. By 'small' I mean single AAA mostly but you can include single AA and CR123 too if you want (not personally interested in the last one) and by powerful I mean power efficiency (i.e. power and runtime, not just the max lumens which I am not that interested in).

I have a feeling that many manufacturers design their small AAA lights with easy/cheap compromises and manufacture them using mediocre quality demands. The bigger attention and efforts are saved to the bigger and more expensive "flagship models". I think that Foursevens is among the ones that do put some bigger effort into these tiny lights, too. My request: Please continue to design and manufacture high efficiency good quality small lights with good functions and I keep on buying them. Can't promise to buy them too many (because how many lights do a man need anyway  , or his close friends as gifts), but, something anyway.

There have been some personal preferences listed so I'll add some of my rather universal ones for AAA lights, too:

  • led preference 1. high cri neutral 2. neutral 3. cool white is not a deal breaker if the light itself is interesting enough 4. a single high cri warm white could be bought for special purposes (like photography), too
  • low to high, no memory, starting with low low or firefly
  • a solid keychain attachment point
  • bare metal (anodized aluminum wears too easily in small lights); could be stainless (preference), titanium or other. If titanium, threads need special attention (I was going to replace Preon P0 in my car keys with the CPF anniversary edition but the very fine threads were too tacky)

Other specs like clicky or twisty, a throwish beam or ultra wide etc., there are needs for all those. :)

Then someone needs to fix your web page on the Quark Click. If I search for the QK2A-X (the format I like the best), I get the following in the description:

If you would like us to configure your light to a different set of outputs, here is the full list of options:

Moonlight: 0.3 lumens, 15 days
Low: 3 lumens, 3 days
Medium: 28 lumens, 20 hrs
Maximum: 336 lumens, 0.8 hrs
Strobe: 336 lumens, 1.6 hrs
SOS: 336 lumens, 3 hrs
Beacon: 0-336 lumens pulse, 8 hrs

Where's high???

I always loved the Preon series but the lack of a neutral white option has kept me from looking at FourSevens lights anymore.

Many manufacturers offer it as choice now, why not FourSevens?

Many complaints in the "Hello? FourSevens Are You Out There? " thread about the disappearance of "High Mode".

High was not initially available but will be in the later production runs of Quarks, we had no intention of leaving it out.

Thanks

That's good to hear it was just an oversight. A HUGE, PINK-ELEPHANT-IN-THE-ROOM oversight, but at least it's going to be back.

Now... the lack of warm/neutral white... that's just an oversight too, right? ;)

They have a black Preon 2 Nichia 219B left at illumn.com . I have one and I love it, but the titanium sold out before I could grab one. I just bought a Titanium Preon, and I'm hoping I can have it modded with a Nichia 219A, or a driver swap with a XP-L 4000k.

+1, missed them, too (I was only interested in P1 hence didn't order at once and they were sold out rather quickly - I already had a modded P1 at that point). However, even if I don't like how the keychain attachment point is carried out (hence none of them has seen EDC duty), I have ended up with a total of 6 Preon P1/P2s now. 5 of them are titanium.

  • P1 clicky modded with 219A that is currently used actively at home.
  • a stock version that is not actually used.
  • a brand new lego P2 that is waiting to be modded some day (might also be gifted away as P1)
  • 2 brand new P1s that are waiting to be gifted (or modded, or used as spares, or something else)
  • a black P1 that is not used and has third party electronics. I needed the original light engine once the first try in modding went south...

P1 is the only light that I have multiple ones (together with P0/A0 that I have 2). However, I would prefer having ReVOs instead if Foursevens still sold them (haven't been brave enough to mod my only ReVO that is my long time EDC). I also gave my wife a red P1 long time ago and the anodizing wore out rather quickly -> not interested in anodized AAA lights any more.

Anyway, having such a stock of different Ti/SS Preons (and 219A leds) + Foursevens doesn't have free international shipping any more + currency rates have gotten quite a bit worse, I must admit that I can't see myself buying more of these current models in near future. :broke:
