What are the latest and greatest performing D2R bulbs? I am looking to get replacements and want only the best. Are there any new offerings or products just around the corner? Thank You!

The color temperature of the one -Virgil- linked is a tad warmer at 4700K vs 4800K for the capsule you linked.

Even warmer still is this: http://www.powerbulbs.com/product/xenon-vision-d2r-85126-single at 4400K.

Still, part of what makes what -Virgil- linked the better performer is higher precision leading to better beam focus. Beam focus is one of the greater determinants of a lamp's performance.

Somewhat related question - so part of using OEM headlights is that the base the bulb sits against, and its alignment to/with the reflector need to be spot on for the precision in the bulb to be... precise... in relation to the reflector, correct?

So to keep the precision for maximum headlamp performance it is imperative that the headlamp's base and reflector are aligned so a proper bulb will be exactly in the right spot.

Yes.

Yes...but why wouldn't they be?

I was just thinking of the myriad TYC, DEPO and other half-of-OEM priced headlights on eBay and Amazon. I'm thinking they're saving money on R&D and just make it fit in the car..?

Sometimes those lamps don't even fit the car.

From CAPA
Headlamp Test Samples:

The headlamp models selected for this study included a left hand (LH) 20002003 Ford Taurus, and a left hand (LH) 2000-2001 Toyota Camry. These models were found to be two of the top ten selling vehicles in the United States and therefore represent a significant quantity of lamps produced for the market. Five (5) headlamps manufactured by the original equipment replacement manufacturer, TYC and DEPO were purchased for each vehicle model (30 total samples). The headlamps were purchased through the same distribution network that a collision repair shop would utilize to procure replacement parts produced by both original equipment replacement and independent manufacturers. Photometric testing was performed on five (5) headlamps for each model and from each manufacturer, with the exception of the DEPO Ford Taurus headlamp, which could not be mounted to the photometric fixture based upon OEM in-vehicle position mounting point data. The lot numbers of the test headlamps are provided in Table 1.

Yep, that is complete junk. I've noticed an onset of crummy products on their site, too, since the founder of the company handed over control to some new people. But they remain reliable (at least for now, in my experience) for buying legitimate Philips and Osram products.

Looks like they're giving in to marketing hype.

This looks like complete junk to me.

Yikes:
From PowerBulbs
The specialist rainbow coating on the glass of the bulb dims or clears up depending on the atmospheric conditions. In misty or rainy conditions, the bulb will produce a brighter beam so that you can see the road ahead with ease.
Geeze, they might as well say they whiten your teeth while you drive.
