Los Angeles CPF get-together?

Is there a CPF get-together for the Los Angeles area? I need help with technology: namely, how to share pics; and I think a face-to-face flashapalooza may be the appropriate environments.

i was last active in 2007, and now, technology has left me behind. I only recently figured out that LED the Energizer cap light is good all-round, and Sky Lumen's TK75VNQ70 ideal for turning Garapito Canyon into one's living room, if only briefly: :faint:Los Angeles Police Department:faint: doctrine hours on Marvin Braude Park. However, I am unable to share beamshot pics no matter what.

During the Christopher Dorner incident, my daily work commute at the time took me through Downtown. I recall seeing a military-style helicopter on the helipad. We do not want to anger the LAPD. So, how about a L.A. CPF get-together at Target or Starbucks? I could log into Wifi there.

To add photos as attachments you need to purchase a support badge here. It turns on a switch so to speak where you can add an attachment photo.

I use a mobile device mainly so adding photos from it's internals is less than ideal.
So an account at a photo share site like photo bucket is easier.
If you know how to share photos in emails you're half way there.

You share the photo to the share site where you have an account. Then you open up said account and pick your folder. Open it up to view your photos. Pick a photo by double clicking or touching the screen of the mobile device.
Right click a mouse or long press a touch screen and you get a share symbol. Looks like a V with dots at the top. For mobile the V is already seen when you pick out your photo. Click or touch the V.
From there you scroll down your choices to the link with in it. Click (or touch) on that and you get a copy choice. Here at your post you right click or long press your post and you get a paste choice. Touch or click that and you'll see the combination of letters that were used in the photo link. When you hit save and view your post you should see your photo.

Now sometimes when viewing your post later you see a little box instead. That usually means the photo site is down for some reason... or you closed your account there.

Hope this helps and have fun at the meet up.

I wasn't aware of that and have never done that. I just go to a free picture hosting site like Imgur.com, choose "New post", "Upload Images", browse my computer for the picture file to upload and when its done, I click on the down arrow in the right hand corner of my now downloaded image and choose "Get share links" from that menu copy the "BBCode (Forums)" info........as that is what you put into a CPF post.

CPF rules require photo image size to be 800x600 or less so I will use photoshop to reduce my picture before uploading onto Imgur. I think there are many different ways to post a picture but this is what works for me.

+1 for Imgur, and CPF has a very good built-in auto-resize feature so you can ignore the size of your photo; I regularly post 20-40 MP images without issue.

I think most Angelinos would be terrified if they walked into a Starbucks and there were a bunch of old men in tactical gear with flashlights all over the tables. All the coffee shops I know of are too busy for a convention of any kind, especially there being as many SoCal-area CPFers as there are.

I'd be down for an LA CPF get together. Maybe we do it down at the beach. How about Docweiler? Plenty dark to test out some lights. We can have a fire and maybe cook some hot dogs. Am I over romanticizing this?

I was in an LA area CPF gathering in March 2007, it was organized by LowBat. We got together at the park just east of Griffith Park, where the old zoo is.

BVH brought out one of his AN-VSS tank lights on a trailer, someone had the new HID lights from Amondotech, and I *think* PK showed up with some huge new Surefire behemoth. IIRC there were also the Lumaray guys with some new "Klingon" lights.

That was a lot of fun. I wouldn't mind doing another, if only to see the difference a decade makes. Back then the HIDS and hotwires were the big guns, with LED's mostly tapped out at around 500 lumens or so. Now, a bunch of us with Meteors, Convoy L6's and who knows what vinhnguyen54 monsters might show up and light up that whole park.

Edited to Add: funny that this should be my post "818".

I would drive from the Palm Springs area for a get together-I'd love to meet new friends and say hi to ones I have not seen in a while....
Eddie,

They should come out here. There is a location, you may know what it is called? I don't remember. But, you follow Washington street to the north, where the earthquake fault is, there it turns West, and becomes Ramon Road, and you drive West to Thousand Palms Cyn.Rd. Then you go North on Thousand Palms Cyn., to Dillion Road. Once on Dillion Rd., and a mile or so East, right up against the mountains is a party pad kind of slab area. (Dillion Road runs from Desert Hot Springs to Coachella).

I was there a few years ago photographing a corporate trip where they actually take you to the fault, I also think the telescope guy's may go there. The place is maintained by this jeep company that takes tourists out in the open desert, and they finish up there by dark.

That at would be a cool place, and there is a Casino and an In N' Out burger where you exit I-10 at Bob Hope Drive, to get there.

Really, unless you are with a group, with everyone armed, the open desert can be, and well, really always has been a dangerous place at night. Not to mention the Cops, can arrive, then ID, and all that. Just driving out to the most perfect place for this activity is just not worth it.

The site I speak of is safe and fenced off, and they have people there, it would be fine facility. I would think it would be reasonable to rent out for the evening. I think they may have parties there during the Coachella Fest. You would be able to light up the foothills at the base of the mountain range where this place is situated.

The range is The Little San Bernardino Mountains which run along the north side of the Coachella Valley, and were created by the San Andreas Fault. This is the Northern part of, and the beginning of the Colorado Desert, that runs through the Coachella Valley, Salton Sea and the Imperial valley into Mexico, and Southeast to Arizona to meet the Sonoran Desert along the Colorado river.

Just a short distance above this location is the Josua Tree National Park.

So to whoever is putting this together, a trip out to the desert from LA, may be fun! And this is the best time to come out here. Really, you could come here from anywhere in the world, it is not limited to LA, this valley is a beautiful place.

Ill try try to figure it our more, however, I dont have the time to do any logistics. Although, I can look into it a little.

Eddie, I am hoping you know about this place.

Yes, there is nothing out there due to that area being protected for certain animals, and too close to the fault line to get county building permits.

So, do you know the site I am thinking about and its location? Would it be good for this GTG? It is pitch dark out there.

Is this just west of Ladder Canyon? For those unfamiliar with the area, imagine a miniature Grand Canyon that is 20-50 feet deep, open to the sky at ground level. Someone has taken the time to secure aluminum ladders at various points to climb up and down for access-it is truly awesome and to be there at night would be an awesome way to test out every light source imaginable. The area Ned is referring to is just west of there and a perfect gathering point for a meet. I will do a little homework to get GPS coordinates and see what I can learn about permitted access. There is a nature preserve in this area that has actually parking areas near a stream. For those who have not been to the Coachella Valley, all along the hills of this area you can see little oasis areas of Palm Trees and greenery that pop up every mile or two along the San Andreas Fault-easily visible from I-10 during the day. Although this area is a couple hours from LA, there is no light pollution, quite comfortable temperatures and an abundance of natures beauty...

I have a panoramic view of that entire area from our home in Bermuda Dunes Counrty Club, I can see the oasis' real good with binoculars, however, the site just has a gate from what I remember. It is right up against the mountains and they did a BBQ the time I went there, it could be an ideal location for an annual kind of thing like the people in PA, have every year. I guess I could go to their event as well from Philadelphia? But, I'm not really from around that area, as a Californian, I could be banned. Also, I don't go there that much, my wife does.

The other thing about being out there is the dead silence, no man made noise just total silence and dark. Some very minor light from the valley floor, but the elevation is high enough that it does not spill over. Even on my street in the country club, it is very dark at night. Problem we have is a Union Pacific freight every 15 minutes. Then during the day a Gulfstream G something every 5 minutes from Bermuda Dunes Airport. As a pilot who has used the airport in little 152's going back a couple of decades, (CORREX: since the Mid 1980's I'm older than I think). I kind of like the jets.
