It seems to be his thing. It corresponds to cutouts in the tail for what's presumably the tailcap.

It's a design cue from some high end watches. The bezel isn't user accessible but is screwed in place during manufacturing.

They are pretty much access points for your fingers to remove the tail cap and presumably the same for the led. ( I haven't actually disassembled the head).
