How can I get the most diffused light out of a single (recessed) downlight?

I have a room here that is a small cubical room, approx 12'x12' with white walls and ceiling, and a single recessed downlight in a 6" can in the center of the ceiling. It is designed for a PAR 30 or 40 bulb. The problem is that because light comes from a single source, it tends to cast shadows. Ideally, I would like something that shoots more of the light out sideways, illuminating the ceiling and upper edges of the walls, so that the lighting is more diffuse. Maybe something like a frosty dome over the light, or even some kind of a reflector assembly type thing that makes the light bounce back up and illuminate (across) the ceiling, which can then illuminate the room with a larger effective spot than the original bulb. I wouldn't want the assembly to hang too low (e.g. chandelier) or look too obtrusive, though. Is there such a thing?

Thanks

Edit: I meant "diffused lighting" instead of "flood"
