I have an olight r50 pro that serves as my backyard light. I live abutting woods and there are no lights on the houses, so my backyard is pitch black at night. Often we get animals in the yard and I can sometimes catch them with the r50 due to its sheer output on turbo, and it's wide spill. Sometimes whatever it is gets away however because the spill isn't wide enough or bright enough. I want to illuminate the entire half acre back yard at once, and I need to have enough run time to get my shoes on and walk to the woods, say 10 minutes or so before step down or overheating to the touch. I don't mind a bit of bulk, but it has to fit on my night stand. Basically I want something with the output of an acebeam x45 or a x7 marauder, but that won't step down for 10+ minutes and won't overheat in that time. Open to big lights, battery packs...etc. Don't want to spend thousands, would probably spend up to 400 realistically. Thanks for any suggestions.

==================Flashlight Recommendation Checklist================

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

____I would like to purchase the light in person from a brick and mortar store. I am located in ______________.
_x__This will be mail-order or Online (location doesn't matter).

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I don't know yet
____Up to $25.
____Up to $50.
____Up to $100.
____Up to $200.
____Up to $300.
_x__Essentially unlimited.

3) Format:

____I am not sure, please help me decide.
_x__I want a flashlight (hand held/self contained).
____I want a self-contained headlamp.

____I want a mounted light (typically for a bicycle or vehicle)
____I want a lantern/area light.
_x__I want a portable spotlight (it may have an external power source).
____Other ____________________________________________

4) Size:

____MICRO - Keychain size.
____TINY - Every day carry (2-4 inches).
____SMALL - Every day carry (4-7 inches).
____MEDIUM - Holster/belt ring carry. (>7 inches)
_x__LARGE - Big enough to need its own travel case.
_x__I don't know/I don't care.

5) Emitter/Light source:

_x__LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

_x__I want to buy a light from a large/traditional manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
____I would like a light from a specialty manufacturer (Possibly limited run/Custom).
____I am interested in assembling my own components. (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source).

7) What power source do you want to use?

____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Alkalinebatteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Lithiumbatteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D and CR123 sized cells common to most stores (often a cold weather or long storage choice).
____I intend to use Rechargeable cells (NiMH or NiCD) based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
__x_I intend to use Rechargeable cells based on less common formats (18500 or 18650 Li-Ion, RCR123, et-al).
_x__I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery pack.
_x__I don't know/I need more information on power sources.

7a) If you have selected a rechargeable option
____I want a light that plugs directly into the wall (literally with prongs built into the light)
____I want a light that has a recharging adapter (your typical "wall wart")
____I want a light that snaps into a cradle (usually mounted on a wall)
____I want a separate/stand-alone charger (this involves removing the batteries to charge)
_x__I don't care

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is not a happy experience).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (1-10 lumens).
____I want an indoor "blackout" light (15-50 lumens)
____I want to confidently walk around an unlit/unpaved rural area (60-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
____I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
_x__I want search and rescue type illumination (800+ lumens).

____SPECIAL NOTE: Burst/Turbo mode Category - There are several lights that will run at a super bright maximum for a very limited period (usually 5-10 minutes) and then will "step-down" to a lower level for thermal control. Check here if this is acceptable.

9) Flood vs Throw: Flood covers an area, Throw reaches out to a distance.

____All Flood: I am doing "arms length" tasks like reading and campsite cooking.
_x__Wide Flood: I want a defined flood area for semi-close tasks like after-dark campsite tasks or working on a car.
____Narrow Flood: I want a sharply defined flood area that will project some distance for tasks like trail walking.
____Wide Throw: I want a beam with a noticeable hot-center for distance throw and a significant amount of "side-spill". Good for rough trail hiking, search and rescue, and general distance work.
____Narrow Throw: I want a beam with a very tight "hot center" and minimal "side-spill". Good for distance viewing, fog, and looking through dense undergrowth.
____Turbohead: I want a far-distance projector with a sharply focused spot of light and minimal or zero side-spill. Good for extreme distance and impressing your friends.

9a) Distance: How far away will you typically need to see with this light (check all that apply)
____Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
____Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
____5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
____30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
_x__50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I am searching from a helicopter)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum continuous output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
_x__30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
____90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
____3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
_x__Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't know.

12) Switch Size, Type, and location (choose all that apply):

_x__Any size switch will do.
____I need a BIG switch (I'll be using gloves or have very large hands or coordination issues).
____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
____I want a remote switch (usually found on high-end bicycle headlights)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________________.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
_x__I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
____I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
____I want a strobe mode. (Oscillating pattern to confuse/blind aka "Police Mode")
____I want SOS mode. (blinks in ...---... emergency pattern)
____I want a beacon mode. (Regular flashes at full power to show location.)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's higher end flashlights).

Hah! I've seen that. I figure there must be something commercially available that outputs enough light to flood my yard. I could always install a bunch of floodlights on my house but I'd rather have something portable that fits the bill. I have seen lights that seem like they would fit the bill if updated (olight x6). That light is 5 years old if not more, I'd imagine something in that form factor would be possible these days with some better run times. Is there an x6vn? Lol. Kind of what I'm looking for. May be unrealistic. Front runner right now is the x7r so if you can think of anything with better run time than that, much appreciated.

I love my X7vn--better UI than the X7 or x7r, more power when I want it, and great flood. My backyard isn't too huge, but the X7 lights it up pretty dramatically. Any more than about 800 or 1000 lumens per 18650 won't be sustainable for too long, so a multi light solution might be best if an X7 or other 4x18650 won't be enough power.

What about the Eagletac M Series?
I'm looking at the turbo model. I want something with some peripheral down field vision, and enough spot to "pierce" the shadows of the vegetation.

Good point on the noctigon. I just saw the advancedknifebro review of.the blf q8, and that also seems to have good thermal management (though it looks less floody than the meteor or X7)

Malkoff Wildcat V6 MD4.

Unbreakable device, simple high/low by twisting head, On/off clicky tailcap. Runs off 2x 18650 rechargeables or 4x CR123 disposable if needed.

The Wildcat is only 1350 but that's all you need. When you start to go beyond that you get diminished returns, and there's not much you can do with 3000 that you couldn't with 1350. Plus, those higher powered lights will sap their batteries and give short runtimes generally, and/or have to step down output quickly to stop overheating.

The Wildcat, especially in MD4 form using 2x good 18650 batteries will give you a great run time and hold its output near its initial turn on power.

Its a flooder, but has enough power to give enough distance for general usage. It comes in a standard 'Cool White' tint or a High-CRI Neutral, which although is slightly less powerful, will give a great beam and colour rendition.

To get that output and not step down , the only answer is to go bigger. Unfortunately you will struggle much over 3000, maybe 4000lm for over 10 mins unless you do go larger like the rc40(mentioned) and x65. These lights can run (6 cell and 8 cell respectively) for good duration's and manage the heat well. The rc40 handles heat very well, i have the rc40vnT(T for throw edition but does have plenty of bright spill) which is a modded light by vinh with PDT(de-domed , premium tint basically so you dont get any dodgy greens etc ). The output with his driver is bumped to near 8000lm and can run for over 10m , still on 30% or 50%(50% being around 3500-4000lm) can run till the cells say no more!

These 3 big hitters are the tk75(maybe worth looking at the new 2018 tk75 with xpl HI) Q70 with xhp70, run time kit added so now 2x4 cell-8 cell overall. More than doubles run time, also the tk75 is good with heat and for its size a good option. rc40vnT which is simply outstanding , over 500kcd and can run long duration's, the x65vn(10,500lm from the 5000k xhp35 HI's) on the right does get hot after a few mins. More to do with the 16.8v pack i presume and the xhp35 HI emitters. Still it can run at 30% which is over 3000lm indefinitely , 50% maybe 10+m outdoors.
The tk75vnQ70 has the large die's xhp70, which do make an awesome flood light with around 100kcd reach, bit over budget but such a flexible option. Up to 3 run time kits, so mega run times with high output available. This is one of vinhs earlier versions with around 15-16,000lm. Run at 30% again offers long use/run time especially with a run time kit installed(8 cell total)

The x7/x7vn and x45 are certainly contenders, but as mentioned, will step down..........physics! You should find though, medium and high modes enough for most tasks and will run very well. The noctigon meteor is an awesome little light, but around 2500lm is the max for indefinite running(again till cell voltage is not enough to sustain). I have the m43vn, crazy 11,000lm, hot in a minute or two. But at 20% on vinhs driver and used outdoor it gets quite warm but never hot. Its also compact enough to pocket carry in a coat, others would be on a shoulder sling for long use due to size/weight(not that i have ever used a strap, but could imagine after an hour it may grow old).

Although the malkoff figures are underwhelming compared to many of the chinese turbo figures, its a light that will work day in decade out! If your light is going to have hard life, drops, dings, bangs etc then malkoff is certainly a good option to look into.
