Is it acceptable to pull a rechargeable lead acid battery out of a lantern, replace it with nicads, and leave the built in charging system as it is?

Why would you even want to do that?

But no. Nickel based batteries require a more intricate charging system. It's not as simple as CC/CV.

It could possibly work depending on the final charge rate of the nicads. Nicads can trickle charge with little problem but it is when you try to charge them beyond trickling with no intelligence to keep it from charging too fast or too much.
Chances are it won't work well and you would probably need to use 5 nicads per 6v.

In other words..... not a simple swap.

If the lantern is nice enough you want to keep using it, but the battery wearing out, you might be able to find a lead acid battery of the same voltage and a compatible size still today.

That is exactly what I have done. As long as I was swapping out the battery I thought I might be able to upgrade it, but lead/acid will do.
