I've got an HP25 which I love. Dual lens with a flood and throw at about 360 lumens:

I noticed that the new version HP30R moves away from AA to 18650 and has a remote battery holder. I kinda prefer the on-band battery compartment for compactness. Why would they do that? Is anyone any doing similar lamps? I find the dual lens is really versatile.

Have you looked at the Fenix HP25R?

This has a smaller head unit than the HP25 but still has a separate flood and spot led with a single 18650 battery mounted at the rear. The head unit on the HP25R is metal rather than the plastic of the HP25.
The HP30 uses two 18650 on a belt mounted battery pack, and allows spot and flood to be used independently or together.

There is a good review of the HP25R on CPF here
