I'm new to the forum (I joined mainly for the LED input but had no idea there was forging here! That is something I always wanted to get into), anyways, I'm a beginner and I am going to learn welding soon and make some custom knives in a forge later. Ever since I saw the movie hunted, where the fugitive creates knife on the spot with a camp fire, I always been fascinated and wanted to learn to do that! That stuck with me as a kid I guess. Anyways, as for knife making in general, I hope to start a hobby and make a custom knife that is known for quality. Therefore I need to ask where should I source my metals? Where do you source yours?

Thanks!

Onlinemetals.com has a lot of info on metals and their characteristics.
They also accept small quantity orders.

Thank you. I never used them before but the fact you don't have to order a bulk supply is very nice.

I just started on my first homemade knife, a very simple kiridashi. No forging here, only stock removal for now. I ordered my 1084 from New Jersey Steel Baron as many smiths on Bladeforums recommend them for knife steel.
