L1 Fact Sheet

I have read through many of the gushing L1 threads, and most there agree: they like their L1. But the conspiracy, if one exists, seems to be L1 are so desired, those that know only share in general terms what it is that makes sales of certain gens like a melee of mothers caught in a mortal Black Thursday scuffle at the Cabbage Patch or Beanie Baby isle. And I can't figure it out, because I never get to see one or hold or use one.

What I think I know that is compelling is that the head threads are E-series compatible, and the tail threads are (please correct if I am mistaken) C-series compatible, making L-series a unique host among what Surefire ever manufactured or sold. Further, many (all?) are fitted with a twisty/momentary tail switch that includes a resistor to allow for direct access to 2 modes merely by the travel of pressing the tactical momentary button, similar in concept to the incan A2 Aviator or McGizmo's McE2S, often called "2-speed."

I have an appreciation for 2-mode lights, for their simplicity and versatility. But I don't think that is what makes the L1 so highly desired. I get the feeling many wish to permanently modify the light to suit their preference, which includes removing the driver and boring the body to accept a larger cell, but this is only certain gens, I believe 1 through 3. The 5th gen seems to be the redheaded step child, and the 6th gen, at least to me, seems like an easy mod to give your E-series Elite head a C-series tail.

But I don't know what I am talking about, because isn't there an LED driver in the body? Is this true for all L1 gens, including the shorter 6th gen? That driver, I would expect, is fixed, and doesn't just fall or push out intact, but if you want it removed, isn't the driver more or less useless or destroyed? I see that the gen 1 has a smooth bezel and an attractive cup-shape, but what can you do with that? Isn't the LED fixed in the head of all gens?

I think what I am asking here is, if the desire to lego or mod them to personal preference is what makes the format highly desired, if there is more than one, what are all the different possible modifications (what do the mods give you)? And what does it take to achieve these different modifications? Can any of the mods or legos be achieved without power tools and permanent alterations?

Also, the E-series thread compatibility of the head threads raises a question I haven't seen answered: is there a retro incan mod for the L1? Can you just screw an incan Elite head and lamp onto an unmodified L1 and get a functional light? I would not expect this to work. Seems to me the prize would be achieving a 2-speed incan, but I have seen threads discouraging that idea as difficult to impossible to possibly dangerous using a (presumably, replaced with more appropriate) tailcap resistor.

I realize many of those that know will not speak for fear of increasing the difficulty of acquiring their beloved, no longer produced, model. If any of the owners or previous owners of modified L1 LumaMax, however, wish to come out of the woods and share the secrets of their modifications, risking that this may increase the difficulty of procuring more L1, I doubt I am the only one that would appreciate it, and I would call them noble, honorable, and brave.

Appreciated also if reverse psychology is avoided: "the 1st gen L1 was a real piece of garbage, worthless, complete junk... let me know if you wish to recycle," etc.

TIA

.... I have read through many of the gushing L1 threads, and most there agree: they like their L1....

What I think I know that is compelling is that the head threads are E-series compatible, and the tail threads are (please correct if I am mistaken) C-series compatible, making L-series a unique host among what Surefire ever manufactured or sold.

No, these are not (strictly speaking) either E-series (unmodded) nor C-series compatible

"L-series" is not a modular series, in the same manner of E-series or C-series

The SureFire M1 was an E-thread / C-thread host, however.

Yes, correct

I have an appreciation for 2-mode lights, for their simplicity and versatility. But I don't think that is what makes the L1 so highly desired. I get the feeling many wish to permanently modify the light to suit their preference, which includes removing the driver and boring the body to accept a larger cell, but this is only certain gens, I believe 1 through 3. The 5th gen seems to be the redheaded step child, and the 6th gen, at least to me, seems like an easy mod to give your E-series Elite head a C-series tail.

I would say that the above is generally incorrect

But I don't know what I am talking about, because isn't there an LED driver in the body? Is this true for all L1 gens, including the shorter 6th gen? That driver, I would expect, is fixed, and doesn't just fall or push out intact, but if you want it removed, isn't the driver more or less useless or destroyed? I see that the gen 1 has a smooth bezel and an attractive cup-shape, but what can you do with that? Isn't the LED fixed in the head of all gens?

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking here, but yes, the driver and emitter are secured into the (unmodded) L1

I would say, generally no, modding per se is not the primary reason the L1 is (was) popular.

Yes, it can be modded.

No, not easily / reversibly.

No, the L1 is not designed for this.

There are plenty of threads on CPF about L1 mods and modding, none particularly recent, but easily found by searching.

Appreciated also if reverse psychology is avoided: "the 1st gen L1 was a real piece of garbage, worthless, complete junk... let me know if you wish to recycle," etc....

Personally, I very much like the L1 ...

That about covers it, archimedes, hole in one. Thank you! You can close the thread, or leave it open for members to post pics of modded L1, or dogs being ridiculous and whatnot.

I currently own three L1's. A Milky modded Arnor, whis is not an L1 to the purist. Short Gen 6 L1 body with a SF KL4 head. It retains L1 functionality though. Two ML1's as well, which were early four flats L1's on which Milky worked his magic. I think the ML1 threads are some pretty good reading and have a lot of L1 info. Both ML1's have had XP-L HI transplants, and are fantastic lights. I think the four flats were a high water mark for Surefire design... :)

It's kinda like those E series....

Reading about it is one thing. Playing with it is another.

Or A2's for that matter. If the original output of them isn't a thrill then your mind may think at first "what's the big deal?" And let's face it, most don't get excited about a 65/10 lumen number that costs $100 to own. But once you get a feel for the possibilities and the lego bug has bitten things can go drastically different very quickly.

Once upon a time the SureFire brand was a novel approach to the world of flashlights. A few really smart people came up with a few ideas using state of the art (at the time) technology and machinery with forward thinking as the possibilities developed.
The world has changed a lot since then. But to me this thread puts some of that thinking into perspective.

No longer in vogue due to the lumen wars and cheaper mass production, yet still relevant in the minds of the target audience with some new people entering the conversation.

I don't own any "L's" (yet) but have recently begun to understand the alure of the various SureFire legacies and with that the large number of possibilities for some rock solid performing lights that will likely be passed down to my great grandkids (if the kids don't sell 'em on eBay first).

"L" madness .... Not all of 'em, but a pretty good spectrum of what was handy, I guess

Lol. Helluva representative sample. Lots of milky tape there! Love the water bottle cap diffusers too.

Love the water bottle cap diffusers too.

This intrigues me, being that the Surefire F04 1" rubber bezel beam shapers tend to expand, fall off and get lost and are not cheap, between $10-$30 second hand. I never noticed their diameter, archimedes, are those standard water bottle caps? They're a inch in diameter? or was there some heat-fitting required to stretch them? Brand and bottle volume, please, if you'd be so kind to share what you remember. I'm thirsty.

edit: I had noticed that many medicine bottles have a 1" mouth, and infrequently use them as bulb-like diffusers for tail-standing at home, but they are kind of dorky to carry around like that. Also, this makes for a 360° diffuser, which is a different application compared to an F04 that directionally diffuses the beam, and the bottle cap, which looks like it may mostly do so, but with a glowing ring around the edge.

edit2: never mind, I figured it out. I live atop an old landfill, and some refuse works its way to the surface, mostly broken glass, but remembered I spied some caps. Retrieved, washed, and for standard 12oz. water bottle caps, it is a press fit, the inner lip of the cap rides the inside of the bezel while the outside of the cap stretches slightly to snuggly hold the cap in place. Nice tip, diffuses and protects the lip of the bezel. I thank you, both!

Great reference photo ... thanks for sharing that !

This is of course for me. I was very glad to be able to see pics instead of just reading to my early days in the CPF...

Does the Gen6 L1 still retain the driver in the body? I want to believe the Gen6 body, without modification, effortlessly lends to a lego E1e (incan), E-series thread-compatible head with a C-series thread-compatible tail, with no permanent mod needed, nor in-the-way driver-in-body, like a custom-E that Time (or Fivemega or Leef) forgot...

The SureFire M1 was an E-thread / C-thread host, however.

...just like the M1 with a clip.

I think I'm not clear on the thread-combatibility of L1. Do any of the various C-series tail caps fit and function on a Gen6 L1? Do any of the E-series heads fit and function on a Gen6 L1?

I think this thread has revealed to me the lego I want (and likely will never be able to afford), a Surefire EML1, with the old school ribbed KL1 E-head, M1 body (rings removed) and 2-speed L1 tail. I can't be the first to think of this. Some CPF member with all the parts that removed the head of their M1 can throw this together and post an image of it I bet. I'll just have to wait until they see my post.

This is generally incorrect ... this will not even fit together properly, let alone function.

I have several, and still think the were one of the best ever put out by SureFire. You don't always need huge amounts of lumens, and these are still very usefull lights not to mention indestructible with the wonderful look and anodizing SureFire used to employ.

In case it wasn't clear enough above ... the L1 has zero C-series compatible parts.

Nope, interpreted what you wrote in post 2 to mean that though threads may be C-series compatible, because of the necessary 2-speed, won't work. Now I am starting to vaguely understand... the L1 tail threads are not and have never been C-series thread-compatible. I would not have stuck to that had it not been somehow suggested to me in the past in another CPF thread. I would also now ask, but already know the answer is "no," if the incan A2 tail cap and the L1 tailcap are the same.

Instead, please just confirm the incan A2 aviator tailcap only fits on incan A2 Aviator tail threads, and the L-series taicaps are only thread compatible with L-series tail threads, the only similarity being they're both 2-speed twisty/momentary and tail loading for cells.

Thanks archimedes.

Say, who is the Cat in Australia who had the huge unbelievable collection of L1's. I just can't remember his name, however he seemed like a real L1 specialist. I'm just at al loss for his name, he could really assist this thread.

All the best,

With warm regards,

Sincerely,

Red LED
