Jetbeam E40R EDC Flahslight Review

Hey folks its been a few months since my last written review. Christmas was a busy period. So over the next few weeks I have a few reviews to post up!

I have EDC this light for over a week and think this may be my first proper 18650 EDC. I would carry the E40R as an EDC.

I was contacted by Gearbest and they offered some lights and I chose the Jetbeam E40R. Any one who is regular knows how much I like Jetbeam so prepare your self for some favoritism. We do not hear much about Jetbeam any more but they still make some great lights. I like the design of the newer Jetbeam lights they stand out.

Build
As usual Jetbeam has come thru with a winner in the E40R. The E40R is built to the highest quality standards. Every thing on the E40R is good all the machining looks perfect and the threads are all perfect. The lens is clean and no marks are to be found any where on this light. No defects in the E40R what so ever!

The E40R is one of the smallest 18650 flashlights on the market. It is smaller than most common flashlights like the Convoy S2+ and BLF A6. The Jetbeam E40R is on par with many 18650 headlamps coming in only a few millimeters bigger than the HC30 and H03. It must be noted that the E40R does include USB charging while these headlamps do not. The E40R is actually smaller than some 14500 flashlights i own.

The overall Size of the E40R is amazing. The E40R would have to be one of the smallest and lightest brand name high output 18650 flashlights on the market.
The E40R has all the usual bells and whistles that you would find on a high end flashlight. Plus extra!

Design
I guess design and build fit closely together they could even be the same category. Design wise the E40R is amazing Jetbeam seem to be coming up with different looking flashlights all the time. I like the finish on the E40R the gray anodizing looks awesome. The anodizing on the E40R is a similar color to the Jet MK1 and 2 but the anodizing does looks a little darker on the E40R. This could be because of the lighting conditions.

I can guarantee you that this anodizing is very hard wearing. I did EDC both the jet MK 1 and 2 and they still look new. That is how good the anodizing is on these jetbeam flashlights. I never take care of my EDC flashlight as they are meant to be used and abused.
The side switch on the E40R is a bare metal color with an LED light that activates when charging a cell inside the E40R.
The side switch on the E40R sits flush with the body. You will not have any issues with accidental activation on the E40R. Plus there is a slight delay when turning on the E40R to help eliminate accidental activation. This feature can be a tad annoying but I can see why they done it. There is a way to bypass this any way.
I think any EDC style flashlight can use a lockout but there is no option for lockout on the E40R unless you undo the tail cap.
Not only is the E40R a good looking light it has the specs and features to back up its good looks. Drop resistance is a bit average but seeing as the E40R can run on 2 CR123s it will be using a buck driver which are a bit fragile.

Performance
What can I say?
The E40R performs very very well. I mean class leading performance? The E40R uses a Luminus SST40. Just to change it up from the usual Cree LEDs.
The use of the Luminus SST40 is what sets the E40R apart from other flashlight in this category. The SST40 is a performance monster stock running at 5amps this LED is capable of putting out 1800 lumens (using the top bin LED).

This performance comes from a single die LED these output figures are ones we would see only from a worked XPL or stock XHP35.
Output wise Jetbeam rate the E40R at 1150 lumens . I am honestly not sure why Jetbeam didn't use the standard current of 5amps or are claiming they dont?. I can say my output figures are different from the Jetbeam output numbers the E40R is super bright. Its probably just the stock cell holding the E40R back from its full potential.
The E40R uses a single 18650 which is included with the light. The stock cell is fairly average it is the JL26 (2600mah) cell that came with there headlamp years ago. Jetbeam state they achieve there output numbers with a different cell the 3500mah. I will be using either a Samsung 25r or a Sony VTC5.
Jetbeam also say performance will vary depending on what cell is used. Which gives us hope that a high drain cell will increase performance.
The E40R is using an OP style reflector or what Jetbeam calls a Coated metal reflector. The reflector is designed by Digital optical system I did Google them and found no info on them. The beam pattern is nice its very even and has no rings. The beam is wide but still offers good throw for such a small reflector.

The SST40 in the E40R is cold white as you would expect. Even more so because luminus is not yet selling other variants. By looking at the light output its hard to tell that it is cold white it almost matches Crees NW tint. So the LED comes of as being a NW emitter even though it is cold white.
The SST40 has more of a green tint which I like it gives it a warmer feeling. Al thought is it only CRI70 I think you will be surprised by the tint.
Its a bit hard to explain so I will leave some beam shots here so you can see for your self.

The Jeatbeam E40R also has a memory function it will remember last used mode.


Output and modes

• High: 1150 lumems at 2H

• Medium: 310 lumens at 4.5h

• Low: 35 lumens at 50h

• Ultralow: 3 lumens at 270h

• Strobe: 1150 lumens

My tested output on high mode is higher than Jetbeams this could be for a few reason. First I could be completely wrong but I doubt I am completely wrong maybe a bit off but not out right wrong. Also the fact that Jetbeam tests with a standard cell a re-badge Panasonic NCR18650. At the same time I retested my BLF A6 and got a usual number just to be sure.

Jetbeam E40R Real Outpout

• High mode: 1430 lumens

Not a bad effort by the E40R it holds its own. This is the number I would expect once we take away light loss from the reflector and lens. Seeing as I measured the driver at 5amps it would equate to around 1600 LED lumens.

Mode spacing is okay I do not like the massive gap between high and medium I could see a 600-700 lumens mode being handy. Technically speaking there is a 700 lumens mode that autocratically activates after 3 minutes of the E40R being on high mode. So that is a bonus.

UI
The UI on the Jetbeam E40R is super simple. Its a simple push and hold to turn on and than you push the side switch to changes modes. The E40R does have a quirk of taking 3 seconds to turn on from off. Its different I can say that!
Not such an issue unless it was an emergency situation? If you double tap from off the light will turn on in strobe mode straight away with no delay this may help If you are in an emergency. I guess I can see why Jetbeam done this its kind of a lockout so you do not accidentally activate the E40R but on the other hand its a tad annoying. Well at least for me because I am impatient.
I can not see any instant access to Ultra low or high from from off unless its saved by the memory.
As I said a super simple UI.

The E40R has 5 modes as listed below

Thermal regulation
When running the Jetbeam E40R in high mode the flashlight will be become hot. Actually extremely hot lol! I have a new laser thermometer lets try it.

E40R temperature test in Celsius

Room Temp: 26c

• 30 seconds: 42c

• 60 sec: 48c

• 90 secs: 55c

• 120 sec: 58c

• 150 sec: 60c

• 180 sec: 65c

Its actually not as hot as I thought it would be I would have guessed around 60 degrees Celsius after 1 minute.
Any way the E40R does have thermal management. The E40R will step down from high mode to a secondary high of sort which is 65% of total output after 3 minutes of operation. Why not just use medium mode?
USB Charging
The Jetbeam E40R does have inbuilt USB charging it uses a standard micro USB cable and has an input of 5v @ 1amp. The E40R charges a standard 18650 at 750mah. It should take around 4 hours for a standard cell to be fully charged. The E40R side switch does blink green when charging. The side switch changes to constant green when the charge cycle is complete. I did notice the green light change a bit early before charge cycle was complete when I checked the cell it was at 4.10v. If left on a bit longer after the light turns straight green the battery voltages at 4.21v so perfect.

Overall the Jetbeam E40R is an awesome light. Defiantly worth the buy! The build quality is top notch and second to none and the output is more than respectable. The push and hold to turn on is a bit annoying I hate waiting 3 seconds but if you can looks past its flaws the E40R is a great buy.

Are you certain it's not in lock-out mode given what you wrote in the UI section? Your description is just like my Jetbeam E10R when in electronic lock-out mode. I can't see this flashlight as being practical if it indeed always requires a press-hold action to turn on in normal mode.
While I like the button of the E40R, the clip looks too similar to the flawed clip of the E10R.
In my review of the E10R, I liked the performance and versatility of the E10R but not the design (tiny side button, uncomfortable clip, and weak magnetic tail) and the UI was rather counter-intuitive.

Yea its a tad weird to have such a long delay it would be more common to have a 1-2 second delay.
If it is in a lockout setting Jetbeam make no mention of this in the manual.
Plus its every time i turn the light on its a delayed start i would have to activate the lockout mode.
