BLF GT - Unprotected cells

Anyone know if the BLF GT has low voltage protection? The manual recommends protected cells. Is that a must? Can I use unprotected cells without a risk of over discharge?

It will blink 3 times then lower the power to warn you of battery's getting low ,
It will shut off when battery's are at 3 volts (maybe 2.8 I can't remember).
