I came across about a ten year old Duracell engineering binder.
One graph just shouted out for comment here.
They were showing relative capacities of Zinc Carbon and Alkaline for different rates.
For all intents and purposes (although there are slight variations) a Zinc Carbon D cell (yes D cell) (ZCD) is equivalent to an alkaline AA (yes AA cell) (AAA)!!!!
At a discharge resistance of 2 ohms, the ZCD gives 1.5 hours and the AAA gives 3 hours. At a discharge resistance of 20 ohms, they are equal at 40 hours. At a dischate resistance of 200 ohms, the ZCD will run about 1000 hours while the AAA will run about 500 hours.
For reference, an Alkaline D will provide 30 hours at 2 ohms, 300 hours at 20 ohms, and it's off the chart at 200 ohms. It will run 1000 hours into 80 ohms.
Now in 10 years, alkalines have improved!!!!!
