Why do we keep aquireing new lights?

This is a hard one to answer.

But why is it on this hobby that even when we have many lights already, we have the urge and need to buy the latest or a new one to the collection?

This year I've bought like 10 flashlights. From a tank E09 to a Niwalker MM15. Which is a lot for me. But still not close to what others get during a years time.

Why do you get new lights when the ones you already have are enough?

Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself it's normal [emoji23] haha.
 
All of mine have a place, have a use. Three are edc, the wife's Tube on her keyring counts as one of those three, and the rest are strategically located for quick use. No redundancy, yet. :D
 
Because like any collecting hobby you are addicted.The only hobby ever I regret wasting hundreds of £,s,just wish I never bothered.
 
I only buy lights i like or need. I keep the older lights (especially the plastic ones) as emergency use. I keep a set of batteries charged in them so they are ready to go. I got a really old Eveready light that i use my old alkalines with. They are also good if anyone needs to borrow a light. The only lights i rarely use are 2 D LED Maglites but they are great to have if my other flashlights are incapacitated or if i need to shower, they light up my bathroom really well if i need to shower when the power is out. Also got a Dorcy LED that is water resistant that i can prop on the shower rack. I still plan on saving some money for a good Li-ion flashlight and want to get the new 3D 625 lumens flashlight that also has a low 58 lumen 117 hour battery life function which will be great for extended power outages or camping.
 
Well, I'm right at the start of a new hobby here... I buy them because I like them, the way they look/feel, I have an interest in the tech and I like the fact they have a purpose. Some of my other hobbies are much less useful ! So, to answer you question, from my perspective I would buy more ( I know I will) if they tick those boxes or at least most of them...

I'm the same as you Big Al W, i like the looks and the power it has.
90% of my lights haven't been on for more than 10 minutes. :(
I think I'll start night walks so I can appreciate them more.

Happy with most of the hobby apart from the spanners who turn the art of collecting into bogey man stories,as I am experienced with what I need I have wasted hundreds when 3 or 4 decent lights would have been fine.Do I need the latest Fenix with another 100 lumens of course I do not.

My wife and I walk every night that we can, specifically so that we can use our flashlights! It's a very good time for both of us.

Also, I get up hours before she does in the morning and I use my lights instead of the ceiling lights - just so that I can use them, ha ha!

OP, I believe that I have completed my personal collection for the time being: All Fenix - E05SS, LD09, E25, LD41 & TK41. For my "needs" the LD09 would suffice, but I want all of them for the joy of having and using them! They are all unique and interesting to me in multiple ways; I hope to hold steady with these for at least a year now (I just started ~3 months ago, LOL!), but like most of the others here I/we have 'the bug'...not that I'm complaining!

I agree. Each has its unique feature.
You started 3 months ago and already have all those. You caught the 'bug' haha
I've always been into flashlight since I got my first one at age 5-6. It was a Maglite solitaire, which I still have today.
It as only in 2011 that I started working and having my own money to buy the more special higher end brands.
My first paycheck I got a Fenix TK35. And wow it was amazingly bright compared to the incandescent ones I had.
 
For me,i guess many reasons,some as work tools,others to camping/outdoor stuff and fun. Now each of these has different factors from flood use to throw or even best of both worlds.............

Then there are brands,some innovative ideas regarding V readouts to UI etc etc. Then each brand for different uses again flood/throw etc.

EDC use,this is very important if not the most ,this is the light with you,great having loads of lights at home,not so great when away from home:thinking:

Then as an interest,yes i do,i like the usefulness of the flashlights,i cant think of a more useful tool tbh..........what else can help you see in the dark?.............anywhere!

Had lights from when i was a kid,to when i did my apprenticeship and purchased a 3d maglite off mr snap on for £40(lot of money back in 1991 for a 16yr old). From then i had many camping shop specials............90% crap to get to the point at the time. Now more maglites and lensers,so choice better but not really caught on too much with technology. Some shops better with the odd fenix light,nothing like from off the internet though(not even mentioning the extortionate prices in camping shops........whoops i did :laughing: )

I have more lights than i need,maybe 3 or 5 lights would be the magic number,times that by 10 and some and still want more...............so yes collect but use too. Have had many hobbies come and go,from nitro rc trucks and helicopters(will be going through that again soon with my youngest) but a flashlight is always needed! A flashlight could save your life,will help you out of the *beep* and find that something you needed urgently! It will help you do those jobs that would not be able to do ,or find that hair line fracture you would have missed on a machine. It will take you safely along a beaten track,maybe an adventure............of a life time.

Then materials,alloy,stainless,ti.............single leds to multi emitters,throwers to walls of light,single cell from 10440 to 26650(in my collection). Multi cell for run times and power houses. There is a lot to keep one interested in imo anyway :laughing:



I need more flashlights...........

It can be fun too... Which is an additional bonus to any hobby :-). I thought I would demonstrate the power of my new TM36 to the wife, so we snuck upstairs and I asked her what building she though was furthest from our loft window.. (We live in london) She pointed at a high rise block that is a good 700m away. I fired the TM36 at it and holy cow I kid you not it lit up practically 3 complete floors like it was daylight! They must have thought an alien race had landed at their window hahha

Hahahah the wow factor is always something great about the hobby. Specially if it impresses a flashaholic.
 
I use most of my lights. Some more than others, but all have been used. Using and collection is what I do most. Rotate once a while, so that keeps it fun :)
And it's kinda addicting ;) heyy.. It healthier than smoking or drinking :D
 
Hhahah totally agree mate. To your point earlier, that TM36 of mine is going to see minimal "proper" use in the grand scheme of things, but he'll I am gonna have a load of fun with it :-)

I think I'm already bordering on a level of flashaholic "perversion" as I've on recently been bitten by the bug and I've already bought 3 new Nitecore lights in a short space of time! :-)

Last week I bought the TM06, P25 (black with crenelated bezel) and TM36 (all nite core)

Super chuffed with them all :-)

I also agree with most above...I do a lot of camping / hiking, and general dog walking. All my lights have a place and use, and like any hobby you just end up building a collection. I have / do have some hobbies where it is almost dead money...in that things do not really hold their value. Flashlights, customs and the like really hold there value, and can increase with time. I enjoy owning a part of other peoples passion, effort and hard work too :twothumbs
 
It's never enough for us. There are always reasons to get another flashlight lol. If there are none, we will make one up.
