    What are you toting today?

I remember this with this era of lights they often mismatched from factory. I remember the answer being thst matching of colours across parts wasn't a priority, rather them being tough and of uniform high quality. After realising that SF were not aiming for matching up parts I actually...

    What cars would engineers make?

Maybe because I have always driven sturdy little Skodas the whole EV scene seems sort of 'damp' to me. A colleague was explaining his home charging setup to me and I was thinking yes but what about greasing the water pump and kingpins. I'm not the target market 😋 Under 900kg, economic...

    What cars would engineers make?

In the UK many a time I've smelled pot whaffing out of a drivers window as they pass. They often show dulled responses by clipping the kerb or inappropriate speed. The police completely don't care. Concerning overbearing 'driver aids' thankfully we have a century of used car models behind us...

I Still Like The Vintage Surefire Lights.

Yes lovely. I still feel sad that SF stopped with these incredible designs. I tried some newer ones but sold them on. I have an E1e and M4 always ready to go.

Lovely. The Fivemega reflectors really are superb. Really shows that with care and passion so much can be achieved.

    What are you toting today?

You guessed right! Whilst the beam is interesting and unique its definitely not spherical. The lens throws the filament shape. This was popular before polished reflectors became mainstream. Here's the beam. I'm still carrying!

    What are you toting today?

Thanks. In fact this is the first time I've tried this light so it must have been something similar. I found this one in a forgotten box in the attic a couple of weeks ago - but its not forgotten any longer 😄

    What are you toting today?

This week I've been carrying a 'saved from the grave' 1920's pocket light. The unusual battery (type 750) was discontinued in the 1960's but with some DIY I made an adaptor. Whilst not the brightest it has proved useful still and especially I love the feel in the hand. Warm and tactile. I look...

Why do LED lights still suck and why do I still use incans or HIDs, your opinions or disagreements please.

Exactly. People bash on incan for the 'sick yellow tint' but are often missing the bigger picture. I've just come back from a holiday in a very dark rural spot and the incandescent light really was at home here. Without being obtrusively bright we were able to clearly see all sorts of nocturnal...

Men wearing shorts in winter...but needing a hat!

Cheers for the replies. Maybe it's always been a thing in other countries but in the UK it's relatively recent. I do wonder if body mass has any impact on not feeling the cold. I'm a 5' 11" guy weighing 142lb and feel the cold really quickly. Get chilblains too. If I wore shorts I think I'd...

Men wearing shorts in winter...but needing a hat!

Thanks for replying. If you don't mind me aski were the shorts chosen for comfort or some other reason? As someone who is still wearing trousers AND thermal leggings the shorts stay put until the mercury hits 75!

Men wearing shorts in winter...but needing a hat!

Where did this 'look' come from? In the UK it's mainly people age 40+ wearing skimpy shorts topped with hood or a wooly bobble hat in the cold north wind. I see tough guys wearing shorts and t shirt (minus the hat) and they look fine. High metabolism and plenty of muscle. Is this seen where...

    Bakelite 'Duchess' lights

Thanks 👌😄. I work under the mantra (when working on vintage lights) that I don't do anything permanent or that could risk damaging it. So no direct soldering or grinding bits out. Getting an old light working again is really satisfying.

    New incans - Edison 5C and 7C

No worries. As someone who (even as a little boy) was interested in older technology, I've found that most times people are 100% into the latest technology and are quick to ditch older stuff. But there's lots to appreciate in my opinion in what others no longer value. Like other older items I...

    New incans - Edison 5C and 7C

You have some interesting thoughts there. As an electronics engineer I do appreciate appreciate an accurate lighting source. I think a bit of study about bulb and LED accuracy would merit some time. I did two here. Very rough but same lighting intensity and left the phone to auto. One was...
