    What is the curious little second chip on some Luxeon Rebel LEDs?

    It's a TVS diode for ESD protection. Sometimes they're located under the dome like on the old Luxeon H.

    Multiple CAT4101's to drive a SST 90?

    It should work just fine, but were you going to use a single pot to control the current? If you already have experience with arduino and there's a 5V source, I'd use it to program an attiny13 and go that route instead.

    The only one that I can remember off the top of my head is the STCF07 from ST Micro. The recommended input voltage is 2.7 - 5.5V, so I guess it wouldn't be all that great for a CR2/CR123.

    best way to mount 16 or 20mm star leds to a reflector?

    Would a TIR optic work, or would you prefer a reflector? Some of them are available with a lens holder that has double sided foam tape at the base which you can use to mount it to the star.

    Need UV LED for currency detection

    I can see the color of the strip under 365nm and 385nm LED's. Neither one really seems to be better than the other. This photo was taken under an array of 385nm LED's. I have no idea what's all over that $20. It doesn't show up under white light.

    Wow, nice work. I can't believe you successfully hand soldered that DFN package. Have you tried prototyping with homemade PCB's? I've found that it works well enough that you typically don't have to order professional boards.
