Ok , finally got a Round Too It !
Been sitting in a box for around 2 months , Cos !
18 degree / 1000 grit edge
55/50HRC
Fail came at 200 slices - & did not Quick N Dirty wood strop back ! + There is a little up and down play when locked open !

Aaaaaargh ! My example is a OVER rated / Over Claimed / Overly Gushed Over - Example !
I think if my sample is anything to go by ... This knife was over hyped something awful !
Got to be real careful of those Fanboy / Knife Crush / reviews - where they claim a knife to be better than sliced bread ( this one is not = my knife )
Buyers remorse = Yeah , a little !

200 slices of what, may I ask? Whatever it is, it doesn't sound like much. Disappointingly few, to be honest, so I can understand you feel underwhelmed by the knife.

Not being an outdoor type of guy, with limited actual needs for knives, I have mostly forgotten what little I knew about steel (VG1 / VG10 steel being a thing is all I still remember), but as for the Cold Steel brand, I get the sense they have 2 series of knives: Budget, and Expensive.

And to me, this definitely seems as a budget version.

My only comparable knife of similar size is a SOG Vulcan Mini folder (and the kiridashi reminds me of their Mini Tanto-version). And brand wise, a Cold Steel Recon Tanto San Mai. Both excellent knives in my opinion, if the feel of it alone is any standpoint., since they are seriously underused (though a tanto to me is nothing other than a conceal carry murder knife - so, zero experience with it).

200 slices off the same as always ! = 10mm Twisted Sisal .

I have been thinking about Nylon rope . which should be more brutal .

Butt !!!! All rope is expensive here in Oz . Cos the Wizards are only interested in Spinning Magic Tricks .. ( Maybe fantasy is better then reality - maybe ? )

Cold Steel - Most of my Cold Steel Knives have been Good at the very least and some excellent . That knife that doubled as a spear point was trashy .. And now this thing ? 4116 and AUS8 from Cold Steel have been ok for me . Since changing hands ( owners ) some claim CS has lost quality ??? Yeah , this knife has no bragging rights !

Thank you.
Sorry, I don't follow knife reviews of any kind, so I had to ask.

That's a rough test for a knife that small, but the edge should still be able to handle more - and if you even got play in the blade...yeah, that is not a quality product.

Does it have an adjustment screw somewhere? I don't remember which one it was, but one of my folders (could be the SOG) got a screw (tiny unbrako) to adjust the blade tightness. Too loose, and it will wobble - too tight, and it will effectively act as a fixed blade.
I presume the main point of that screw is to be able to remove the blade completely to ease maintenance.

There is no side to side play - only a little up N down play ( Nothing to worry about ) ... It's just annoying that it's there .
And yes , you can tighten the pivot .

GSM outdoors bought Cold Steel in 2020. Lynn cashed out.
From all reports, this has not improved quality in any way, and I haven't heard any praises from the new products of their core line produced since the acquisition.

At this point, vintage Cold Steel is where its at for fans of the brand.

That makes sense. My Cold Steel tanto was purchased way before that, and would certainly explain why I am not impressed by their current lineup.

is it feasible that such a straight cutting edge doesn't lend to it slicing well? Would it fare better with a reprofiling to either a curved edge or hawkbill?

Oh yeah ! Sheep 's foot is a PITA on a flat surface .. But should not affect edge retention to any degree . I have tested a few sheep 's foot blades .

Never have liked sheep's foots (sheep's feet??). Or the now-popular "straight razor" look.
Give me some belly! It doesn't have to be a lot, just enough to be able to rock it a bit from tip to heel. Makes all the difference in slicing or in chopping.

Sheepsfoot is great for slicing.
I'll take your word for it that it is great for some slicing tasks.
But if you want to cut against a fixed surface (e.g. cutting rope against a cutting board), then you have to make sure that the line of the edge is exactly parallel to the surface of the board, or your sheepsfoot will touch only at the tip and be raised off the board for the rest of its length. As old4570 said, "Sheep 's foot is a PITA on a flat surface."
With a bit more belly, the natural rocking movement of the hand will make sure that every part of the edge makes contact with the board at some point. Or if you make a draw cut, then more of the edge will be drawn through the workpiece than just the very tip.

Maybe I should just stop -- people have different tastes in blade shapes, and those preferences are also affected by differences in the typical work that different people do with their knives (e.g., I'm not a whittler, some people whittle). Luckily, there are lots of knives for lots of different tastes and applications.

A lot of straight edged blades seem to made for angled cutting (razor blades, utility knives, preforation blades, slide cutters, guillotines), scrape or push cutting (razor blades, straight razors), or impact/impulse/rotational cutting (saws, guillotines, some butcher cleavers and machetes, etc.)

That low edge retention is rather disappointing...Have you ever done a razor blade or utility blade edge retention test?

Coldsteel always use to be maximum performance for the steel, even for a 420 class steel. 420 will only get you so far and if it is 55hrc, you are in a world of hurt edge rentention wise (think Gerber Strongarm). For the same price CCFFCC k110 any day.

No ... And yes . A long time ago I tested a Hybrid knife with drop in replacement blades .. It wasn't great ..
The whole thing rattled a little like a rattler .
