So I got my Convoy T6. Impressive little light. First impression was a well built solid light. Given that all aluminium lights are for the most part the same, I expected nothing less than solid. A little small in the hand, and obviously I figured that before I made the purchase but it sure packs a punch. My one had a slightly yellow tint and when compared to the Fenix TK05R which has a cool white, that was apparent. However, next to the TK it did give better colour rendition, showing things as they are seen in the daytime. While a cool white fan, this LED was impressive and I had an instant liking for it. The deep set smooth reflector really catches the light, forms a beam and throws it yet there was still enough spill to keep me from complaining. In fact, for me, I thought the spill was just fine although those who like a medium or a lot amount of spill, you won’t get that with the T6 but as stated I was very happy with the spill. I am not a fan of a reverse clicky especially as you cannot use an intermittent momentary light activation. However I bought it anyway as I wanted to see how good a Convoy was. I am happy with my purchase for sure because for the price of a Convoy I saved myself a lot of money for a light that will likely become my secondary if not, at times, primary EDC light. To add, the switch is quite stiff which is good in some ways as it will prevent accidental turn on and this is helped also by being a reverse clicky so a bit of a positive depending how you look at things. With the recessed button you get to tail-stand and depending on what heat would be generated long term and the run time of the battery in the lowest setting of 1% you may be able to have it on all night to act as a marker as to where your light is. It would have to be on a desk of sorts, upside down, as there is far too much light even at 1% to get any sleep.
On high or what they call 100% you’re going to get rapid heat generated in the head and that isn’t ideal. Not too different than that with the Fenix TK05R The good thing is, the way this light throws, your likely not going to need 100% and once I have had a good play with the light I will configure it to 1, 10, 50%. On the 10% setting you get an impressive distance and I really can’t see myself using more than that in most situations. Pity they didn’t have a moonlight setting. In fact even on 1% you could very easily walk a bush track…..impressive indeed. Truth is you could navigate a bush trail with half the light that the 1% setting provides. In fact the T6 on 100% is brighter than the Fenix TK05R on high which is saying something.
The crenulated bezel is nothing more than for show but hey the light seems so good I don’t care. I tried the light on an AA rechargeable and it still puts out a lot of light. That was one of the reasons I bought the Convoy T6, because it could use the Vapcell battery and a normal AA and trust me there is plenty of light with an AA battery.
For someone who likes throw more than spill I really, really like this light. In fact the beam reminds me of my Fenix TK20R v2…. a beam that even in its lowest setting gives plenty of illumination meaning you can run it for longer with enough light to get stuff done. I also really like the fact that you can configure your light to have various levels of brightness and have them either start off in low or high as you require, plus it has last level memory mode. I believe you can turn last mode memory off. The T6 also offers strobe and battery check within its mode selectable options. The knurling is acceptable….no knurling on any light has really been an issue for me.
For me, I like the Convoy T6 over and above my Fenix TK05R, TK20R v2, PD32R and PD25R and I do like my Fenix light picks. All my Fenix lights are great and some of the features would be good on the Convoy but what you get for the money seems almost unbeatable. If you’re looking for a thrower with reasonable flood, a light as mentioned that you can do a lot of stuff on the 10% level and even a lot on 1% then I would say buy a Convoy T6. I don’t think there would be any reason for you not to like it. (Convoy T6 has 5 levels of intensity …. 1%, 10, 35, 50 and 100 and these are selected through various mode settings so you can choose what the light does). To add:- now I have done my park at night thing (the tree at 125 meters) I am sold …. For size, for value and the performance, the T6 is a winner. Check out those pictures. Other than the blurred T6 they are ok. Done with an IPad as I am no photographer but all done on the same setting. I came away from my trek just loving that Convoy T6. A pocket beast with a loveable beam.
