    What voltage are your battery packs? From what I can tell, the original packs are 6V packs built up from 5x 1/2D cells in series. If you build a pack from 3x D cells, you will be running well under the design voltage. The 1/2D cells are still available, although not common.

    Agree on the MDC 2AA in neutral being an excellent choice. I'll add that if you want single-mode, the Malkoff E1 and E1HT heads can be used with the 2AA body, as can the M31 series in the VME head (which gives you a warm option along with some lower output options).

    I'd be looking at "balloon lights" (the type you see on construction sites, not the kind you get at the party store). Won't project quite as far as the more typical floodlights, but will give you much better lighting in the area around the machine.
