    Zebralights are great but have you thought about something smaller, simpler and cheaper? The Silva Siju, for instance, is good for reading in bed, as is the Petzl e+lite. Both use coin cells which are really cheap on-line. I like them because they're so small and light I forget I'm wearing them...

    I think a Photon 2 or Freedom would do what you want. Plastic, light, tiny and you can put it on your key ring and not notice it's there. Utterly reliable, too, the coin cell isn't going to leak or lose its charge even if you don't use it for ages.

    This morning I used my Fenix HL50 for running to work at 7 o'clock, with a red flashing light on my bumbag. It's just starting to get light at that time, so I didn't need it to see by but it's good to BE seen.

    The Fenix HL50 is about 3 1/4 inches long if you use the AA adaptor. Would that be within limits? It's easily unclipped from the headband. I have one and it's a great little light, simple to use,(not too many levels, no complicated programming), nice beam for night hiking.

    A bit of an oddball suggestion, but how about getting an old Petzl Zoom from ebay and fitting it with one of the LED replacement bulbs? They can be used with 3xAA NimH batteries with the appropriate adaptor, and put out about 120 lumens, regulated.
