Streamlight Strion 2020 (New 2024)

I would be very, very surprised if the switch, its actuator, or actuator cover used in the 2020 are different part numbers from those on the DS-HL.

Then again, I'm surprised by stuff every day!
The 2020 series lights have an indicator LED in the power switch and a translucent cover, so it's a different part#. Feels different too.

I am feeling the same thing you are, not sure what to make of it, and I'm sure you're talking about the switch on the head.
Yeah, the head switch. How "loose" does yours feel? Whatever's in there moves around and jams sideways half the time I press the switch. Don't think it was this way when I got it. It's like the mechanism broke off under the cover.

There's a 2024 version? Is it finally a warm tint? Surefire only did one of those and then dropped back into the blue cold stupid.

I think we're unlikely to see that in any models except the 'Color Rite' versions (like the Stinger), but that doesn't mean they won't move in that direction if those models sell well. They likely view those as an experiment in progress. So far, I've read of 2 users here who have bought one of those Stingers. We'll see if the market drives such a change.

I'm more a 3500K guy, but this is definitely an improvement over the blue crapbeams of most LED lights.
3000K is a bit warmer than I might have chosen too, but it might work well in that user segment / environment (I'm sure it did with their focus groups), and I have to give 'em big credit for at least trying it with a few models. I think the Stinger line was a good place to start, as there's about a zillion long-term Stinger users out there and some might find this to be the 'LED Stinger' they've always wanted. Given its overall performance envelope and primary applications, I think this is a very useful output curve too:

Many conversations with different people at Streamlight over the last week. They're extremely responsive and I've only had very positive interactions with them, but I don't think there's a resolution with my Strion 2020 issue. Key points:

-It has a separate part free under the switch cover. This can tilt sideways and jam the switch if you don't hit it straight on in the middle. Streamlight describes feeling the loose part in their samples but they couldn't duplicate a functional issue. Maybe my thumb isn't Pennsylvania spec.
-It's new enough the repair department hasn't seen them yet. Management took mine back for analysis and sent a new replacement light. Both lights (made the same month) have the same issue for me.
-They offered to try to find one with a better-feeling switch but I passed for the time being. I get the feeling it's more design than quality control.

So I want to like this thing, but even if the switch worked perfectly it still feels slightly broken and weird. I hope they can engineer this out in the future. I'm interested to see what other owners have to say about it and if Streamlight ever changes the design.

Also, not related to the Strion 2020, but the Stinger 2020 is another model I can only give a qualified recommendation for at this point. I love mine and I use it a lot. I've also had two that have been repaired multiple times for different tail-end problems. Streamlight strongly implied this is regular work for the repair department. So it's a great light until it's dropped on the butt.

Love my Streamlight Stinger Classic LED.
Might get the 2020 version.
Staying away from the latest Strion model.
At least until SL corrects the teething issues with it.

One little detail to keep in mind if it's a 2020 vs DS-HL decision for some buyers is subjective, but could be a priority for some.

If you're primarily an under-hand / garden hose grip, side switch user, with the 2020 you'll have a fantastic way of setting / changing the output level; maybe the best I've ever seen / used in most respects (based on my Stinger 2020 experience).

If, however you're primarily an over-hand / ice pick grip, tail switch user (as I am), you'll have to change your grip to change output level (unless you use a second hand, which I usually don't have and thus don't want required), because w/ the 2020, that cannot be done with the tail switch (AFAIK).

This is the best excuse I've had to stick with the DS-HL.

If they got rid of the Strion 2020's moving element and made it a solid switch like the Strion DS it wouldn't have the problem. If this isn't just a me-issue I assume they'll improve it at some point. I mean the light basically works fine so I don't want to stop anyone from getting one, but flashlights shouldn't be a situation where the wrong fingering won't turn it on.

I can't say enough good things about Streamlight as a company, though. I took all this as a chance to get my modern Streamlights all fixed up and they rebuilt, upgraded, or replaced almost a dozen lights with just a few days' turnaround. I've never had this kind of customer service from a company before, even Surefire or Ruger. I know there are a lot of people who go "Well my Wuben or Pingpong does the same thing for half the money" but I see those same guys talking about something spending a month in China after it breaks.

I'm loving my Strion 2020, the only fault I can find is the switch. I have to make sure I press straight down on it or it doesn't feel right. Mine so far hasn't failed to work with the switch though. Is it a new design from the previous switch or something not correct in the assembly? Time will tell, thanks for keeping us abreast of what you've learned from Streamlight.

I have long spider fingers so I might be able to get more angle on it. I believe the loose part is intentional design since I think they called it a "centering disc." But it's different from Stinger and Strion DS switches. Those don't have a separate part between the switch itself and the rubber cover. It's possible the Stinger 2020 switch does have the loose part, but it also has a recessed switch that you can't help but press straight down.

If there's anything you don't like about a Streamlight you can call up and pass along your thoughts. They do listen to customers even if they can't do anything in the short term.

Maybe if a large number of folks complain. But many years back, I had an opportunity to speak directly with a Streamlight representative. A high-ranking one, face-to-face, in Manhattan. I told him how happy I was to hear that a new LED NightFighter model was soon going to be introduced.... And everything wrong with the incandescent version that I bought a few months back. He listened, smiled, told me I should be happy with the new model soon to be coming out.

Yeah........ They put two rings on the old model and jammed an LED inside of it. That was literally it! Also, the encounter was a friendly one as the rep. happened to be visiting the Authorized Dealer, Army + Navy Surplus store at the time in Downtown Manhattan. Not the huge one that went out of business. The smaller one that the owner sold for a nice chunk of change, and then later it went out of business.

Guess you can't win 'em all. That reminds me, was/is there a big police supply shop across the street from the old police academy in NYC? I have a flashlight a guy said he bought himself the day he graduated in 1974.

I'm 99% sure I know the one you mean. Can't recall the name off the top of my head. It too went out of business, and quite frankly; good riddance! It was always advertised as a police supply shop. So obviously certain things were off-limits to civilian customers. I had actually called ahead, spoke with an employee, and asked if non-LEOs were Welcome there. He said sure, come on in. They had been advertising a certain hard-to-find SureFire filter at the time.

I go in, and I get treated like garbage by the owner when he realizes I'm not an LEO. I ask about the filter, he responds as though I asked him if he has any erotic pics. of his mom for sale. Angerly tells me that THAT is a special order item only, and of course he has none in stock. At the time, I was looking to get a SureFire M6. Figured since I was there, I'd ask if he had any in stock.

Oh boy! Que a massively angry rant from that low-life piece of worthless trash. He went on for a couple of minutes ranting & raving about how his LEO customers want and need "real" flashlights. And, how those are the only models he stocks at HIS shop because he doesn't cater to collectors who want silly lights. How he stocks SureFire 6P and 9P models. Along with Streamlight Stingers, Strions, and spare batteries for them. 3D-cell Incandescent Maglites, and MagChargers. And, how dare I ask him about an M6; unless I meant the Pelican M6.

At that point I realized I was clearly dealing with an angry EDP. (What the police refer to as an Emotionally Disturbed Person.) I was a much younger man, and far more tolerant of an individual person's idiot views of the world and certain topics. I thanked him, wished him a good day, and walked out. Considering the shop completely went out of business several years later, I'm guessing I'm not the only one whom this nut-job convinced to never return, and spend their money elsewhere.

The whole thing on his part was just stupid. This was back when buying stuff off of the internet and waiting for it to arrive on your door was still unheard of! No one did that. You either got a catalog in the mail, filled out the order form, along with a check or money order, mailed that off; and waited for weeks to get your stuff. Or, you called a business, gave them your credit card number, while speaking to an actual human-being; then waited a bit less to get your order. But this was at a time where if you lived in a big city.... You went and bought what you wanted in-person! And, that last option was the one most people back then were used to and preferred! Heck, back then Amazon was just a tiny start-up that sold books. Everyone expected it to go out of business within 2 years when Barnes & Noble's or Borders would either crush them or buy them out for a few bucks.

I can just imagine all of the civilians this angry idiot excuse for a businessman alienated until he went out of business. Don't like collectors? You're a businessman. Guess whose going to spend the most amount of money in your store buying up inventory, and coming back consistently to buy more. Yeah, it's not going to be officer Bill who just graduated from the police academy; and purchased a Streamlight Stinger from you. You're not going to see him for about 8 years when he finally comes back and buys one new rechargeable battery-stick for that very same Stinger. You'd think a business owner during that era would have more brains than that. Guess not!
