I think I'd like to get one of these, but I'm not sure what all the different leather choices are. If the elephant is the smooth one on the right, which is the one on the left? Is that the shark? Are these both softer than cowhide?

Yes, the one on the left is shark, I love mine. I can't attest to cowhide softness though.

Thanks for the quick responses. I didn't scroll down far enough on my first visit to the website. I see now that he has the different styles labeled at the bottom.

Some hide info:
Steve is correct, shark and elephant are the toughest overall but stingray is a contender in a different way.

The rating system is totally unscientific but is to give you an idea of how scratch proof the hide is. Let's say a cowhide work boot is a 5 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the toughest.

Shark is darned near indestructible. (about a 7 on our toughness scale) Very durable, scratch resistant and IF it gets sctatched, it wears it well. When shark is tanned properly, softer is stronger.

Elephant is Tough!! Soft and pliable, but soft like a well worn pair of boots rather than a flannel blanket. (rating 7.5) It'll take a beating and is hard to scuff. The surface of the hide is made of tiny bumps that resemble taste buds and act like little bumpers.

Stingray is even tougher (9.5 on our tough scale) but will scratch on the surface revealing a white "scar" if you REALLY try; like with a sander or rubbing on concrete. So let's call it an 7 for our scratch rating overall.
Stingray will literally last for hundreds of years. Each little bump is cartiledge and very tough, in fact it is hard to sand through the thin hide with a dremel tool.

Thanks Matt for clarifying that, I think stingray is the way I'd like to go then, unless there isn't enough demand for it. If you get time, would you PM me with a cost for the stingray should you decide to do it? I don't want to go into this thinking I can afford it, then I get a Paypal request for a surprisingly tidy sum, even though your work is definitely worth it.:D

Stingray will be about the same price as the elephant. Black stingray, that is. Other colors, lots of colors are available but pricing may be a bit more.

You bet, I can do belt loops on any of these Holesters but they are $15 additional. What??, more $$ for no clip? Actually the loops are wet molded to shape and then dried with the light in place to keep the fit secure and they just take longer to fashion.

What I'd term the best of the best:twothumbs

Of course, the matching croc belt & matching croc loafers are now required - those will make the PD-S look like a bargain:huh:
