Lights are the only item I EDC two of. I have had them run out of gas. For all other items I ignore the "2 is 1 and 1 is none" cautionary saying. Although come to think of it pocketknives have also run out of gas by going dull. Luckily haven't run out of bullets.:D
That's why I keep a milspec pocket sharpening stone in my manbag. :D

I always have two lights with me -- one of my Gizmos, and an Eiger 10280 as a backup.

good to know i am not alone. :D

at least i had ONE light with me :D (and 2 spare 10440s and 2 AAAs in the bag) received my additional 18650 extension tube and forward clicky switch from solarforce last night, so now my L2 is running on 2x18650s and a Lumens Factory HO-9 with loads more runtime than 2xRCR123s and that is sitting in my bag right now (no way to belt carry or pocket carry that baby).

EX10 + 3 spare RCR123s with me too, feel adequately prepared lightwise.

So that I don't ever walk out without a light, I keep a Fenix LOD in my wallet and another one on my keychain. I keep a Fenix P3D in my car and a Fenix P2d in my briefcase. I hate to be without a good flashlight or 2! If I remember, I almost always have a Fenix P2d in one pocket and A SF L4 in another pocket.

Apologies for taking a very serious tone with this post. But I still clearly recall news-casters mentioning that many 9/11 survivors used the light from their cellphone screens to navigate down broken, darkened, stairways.

Always a good idea to carry a high-output main light, and a lower-output 2nd light geared more for runtime. My main light changes. But my 2nd light is usually my Fenix L0D Rebel 80 with a lithium AAA cell in it. Lower output with plenty of runtime, and if I need more light there's always turbo mode.

I feel naked if I leave without my gun..... it happened once, we were riding our motors, and were going up to town called Crossville, TN, got half there and I turned around went back home to get my Colt. My girlfriend was rather p.o.
When comes to flashlights, I always have one in my vehicles including my bikes and 4 wheelers.

Yes, when I get distracted in the morning and forget any of my usual EDC items I feel uncomfortable until I fix the lack from my BOB which has spares of almost everything. (My congregation calls it "the MacGyver bag.") So my discomfort is usually very temporary.

I have a Fauxton or AAA light on my keychain, and only sometimes another AA light (D10 or K-106). I do feel naked with only the keychain in the afternoon/evening, but in the morning it's not a problem.

I do, however, feel naked without my swiss army knifes. One on the keychain (small one with pen and phillips screwdriver) and beaten-up standard model with missing toothpick and tweezers. Oh and the knife from a defective swisscard in my wallet

I feel naked when:

  • I don't have spare batteries
  • I don't have a 3rd light
  • I feel a draft anytime, anywhere
  • I can't feel my pants

The third light sometimes replaces the need for spare batteries:D

I am a typical civilian student, with the exception having 2 pounds of stuff in the pockets and 3 pounds of stuff on the belt. Not being able to feel my pants is one of those things that bothers me the most:whistle:

What you 'need' is your brain and your hands. Any other tool you happen to have is great but try not to allow yourself to become distracted by the absence of one tool that you forget about the great adaptability your mind permits you.
The lack of should not cause anxiety. If it does or you are feeling naked. That may be a good time to go out in the yard naked (or next too) and rediscover the innate competence you have.
You're a powerful animal! You can make what tools you need:devil:

Amen to that

However, I will feel naked not having at least one light when I'm off to do maintenance at a customer's site (God know I need a light then).

Also, I will feel naked if I don't have at least three flashlights when I go hiking at night, or if I know I'll need a light on the way back.

I feel naked with no lights,
merely uncomfortable with 1 light.
I generally have 3 on me when not at work, and 5 when at work.

Maratac AAA for low low, and headlamp use Hoping the Quark MiNi AA will replace this....
EZAAw for the throw
Fauxton on the keyring for backup

Work additions
streamlight 3AA with side clicky in the tool pouch (nite eyes tool pouch, very nice pouch)
Fauxton on the work keys

Eventually I would like a work light to keep on my cart, one that clips to machines, with a pivoting head. The new Fenix anglehead might work.

Of the lights I currently EDC, if I was stuck with just one, It would be the Maratac, mostly because it makes a good headlamp.

Things you will never, ever be without

Thread title says it all, really. Of course for most CPF members "some light in the dark" will be among those, but what else?

Due to my hobby-related history mostly with Z80-based systems, I realized some years ago that for the rest of my life, I'd probably never, ever be without a Z80 cpu near me. My collection counts somewhere around 30 of the buggers (either in machines or anti-static foam). Something as catastrophic as a house fire would probably make me go out & buy a few spares. And if I'd be living in the jungle with no electric power to speak of, I'd probably still have a few of those cpu's stashed somewhere or displayed on a wall as a souvenir. So if the day comes, I die and be cremated, go ahead toss some Z80's in there for good measure...

Another thing (I think / ehm... hope / expect) is my next meal. I've head some rough times in the past, and there have been periods where money was tight enough to worry about where/how to get the next meal. I've promised myself not to let things get that far ever again, so money might still be tight but never again to the point where I'd have to worry about keeping my belly stuffed. Which unfortunately can't be said for a significant part of our world's population... :(

So what will you never, ever be without?

Re: Things you will never, ever be without

A spare decent working bicycle. I hated having to miss riding on good days when my bike was out of service for whatever reason. Once I acquired another bike (second hand) I vowed to make sure to keep at least two bikes in working condition at all times-one as my main ride, the second as a spare in case my main bike needed repairs. A secondary benefit of this was that I didn't have to immediately do a repair even if I was busy with other stuff. I could just ride the spare bike, and repair the other one at my leisure. Concurrent with this was to keep an inventory of the most common parts which need replacing-starting with wheels and tires. Two out of my three bikes are in working order. The third one just needs to have a rear wheel put on to make it useable.

good heavens... don't mention spare bike parts! I must have a dozen spare tires, twice as many inner tubes, a dozen chains and cassettes, 5 Brooks saddles, a handful of rims, etc. Most of my spares are for my shiny vintage-ish bikes from the 70's and 80's.
And then there are the 8 bikes themselves....

Re: Things you will never, ever be without

Halfway to church this morning when I discovered I had forgotten my light. :fail: Silly me, I usually carry two. Not happy, :shakehead and pretty much felt naked.

Made me realize the only Thing I (hopefully) will never be without; Faith in a loving God who provided for my salvation.

Merry Christmas!
