I had nothing better to do than wait on hold for a while while today, so I called Coleman back to ask a few more questions, and while I had the guy on the phone I asked about the output rating of the lanterns again. Here is what I got this time:

Powerhouse dual fuel model 295 = 135 CP
Northstar propane model 2500 = 150 CP
Northstar dual fuel model 2000 = 165 CP
Pinnacle - propane - model 2600 = 250 CP

He also stated that the Pinnacle is the brightest lantern Coleman makes. It appears the info this guys was getting was inline with the info I got on my 2nd call.

Yes, the Pinnacle uses that style mantle, same as the NorthStar. It's a #95 mantle.

Cool, pinnacle might be an excellent option for somebody looking towards propane. I've got a Northstar Propane and a Northstar 2000, they are pretty close in brightness. I wonder if the pinnacle is noticably brighter or just brighter? Inquiring minds ya know.

My assumption (I could be wrong here) being that 1600 lumens equates to a 100W bulb.

that depends on what chemistry of 100W you are referring to:D

100W Sylvania High Pressure Sodium Lamp = 9,500 Lumens
Sylvania H38 100W Mercury Vapor lamp = 3000 Lumens
100W Double Ended Halogen T3 Quartz = 1850 Lumens
Sylvania 120V 100W A19 Clear = 1720 Lumens
Sylvania Halogen PAR38 Reflector Lamp = 1700 Lumens

A conventional GE soft white frosted = 1710 lumens

Just remember that light perception is logarithmic. You need a large increase in light to notice it. That means your turbo lantern 5000 uses a whole lot more fuel and produces a lot more heat for not much increase in usable light.

I've had good luck with the little exponent single mantle model also. Nice and small...

Makes sense to me, theres not a huge difference between all of the big boys.

You mean the little liquid fuel model?

I've been tempted to get one but they dont have much of a run time, not that it's a big issue. I might have to start looking for one once I'm gainfully employed again. Got cut from the job a week and a half ago so I'm kind of on a self imposed budget. Going to try and hold out a few months before going back to work, been working since I was a kid pretty much non-stop and just passed 52 now so a break is welcome.

It's nice and compact, while still putting out a good amount of light. The overall runtime's not a gripe; it's easy to refuel. The runtime between pumping is my only gripe. The small tank doesn't hold much air volume. Expect to pump it maybe every 30-45 minutes. Other than that it's great.

looks promising...how frequent do you go through mantles?

One of the bigger advantages with the liquid fuel is that the lantern sits lower, and has much more stability than a propane lantern. Picnic tables at camp sites aren't really level, nor smooth/flat, so I'm always worried about knocking over the propane lantern.

Plus the whole dual fuel/gasoline thing.

I just picked up a pinnacle lantern but have to say I am not as impressed with it as I was hoping to be. It doesn't apear to be much brighter than my no name propane 2 #21 mantel lantern. The light out of the pinnacle seems to be oranger or less white than my 2 mantel lantern. I also find the suport poles cast a lot of varying brightness in the radiated light not found in my 2 mantle version. The perfect flow doesn't seem that perfect and there is still some flicker in brightness.

I do like the flat top of the lantern, I can put a pot on top to warm up it's contents. The built in storag case is nice but I do worry about the lever releasing the globe and handle geting bumped and letting the lantern fall.

Not much difference in the brightest dual mantle and the dimmest dual mantle, the no names in propane are pretty close to the best. All made in China as far as I know.

Quick note. Bought a coleman kerosene lantern.

Sucks.

Mantles are impossible to find. Had to order some directly from coleman.

Only runs well on max. Any other level doesn't burn hot enough to keep the generator going, and to dispel the eye-watering fumes.

That's too bad. I only have gasoline lanterns, but I hear the keros are supposed to put off less odor than a candle. Did you buy it new? What kind of kerosene are you using?
