I have a second plan to allow that though I can go into if anyone is interested.

Of course we are interested ;)

My headache of the last few hours has cleared so there's a far better chance I'll understand it :twothumbs

OK, so if you need the photons from your flashlight to be able to illuminate a space within a darkbeam created by antiphotons, you simply use a flashlight that projects a quarkless stream of positrons and electrons.

These recombine to form photons, which would then be visible.

If you accidentally emit quarks as well, the process would instead result in a death ray (see other patent...), and the beam would be an anti-matter beam that annihilates bosons and other useful stuff that holds us and other stuff together.

(This is a bad thing)

The Pentagon pays well for bad things though, so, its a living at least.

The prototype darkbeam uses a more off the shelf approach.

The first beam is pure light (photons) emitted by an off the shelf LED. This beam is then modified by an obstructor element that absorbs and/or reflect the photons, preventing them from illuminating what was in their path.

If there are other light sources present, for example, a giant ball of hydrogen gas undergoing nuclear fusion might be present such that ~ 8 minutes later, its photons might be hitting where you want to project your darkness. More proximal sources, such as filaments that are working like resistance heaters, that also give off small amounts of photons as a by product, can be found to also cast small areas of light...much more quickly than the more distal sources.

Obstructor elements must be installed to block the path of those photons as well.

Examples of obstructor elements can be your hand, for small areas, tree's, especially with prolific photosynthesis processing surface areas, or rooms with no windows, etc...depending upon your application.

So, by causing an interruption in photon supply to a surface that would otherwise have been illuminated, you can project an area of darkness instead.

:D

Flashdark sounds like a dangerous product. I can imagine people using it for evil. You can use it to cause temporary blindness. The only good use for flashdark I can think of is getting out a parking ticket.

Thanks TEEJ :)
Thanks more_vampires,

I'll have to save all this for another thread sometime :)

Hi Newguy2012,

My main purpose was to darken the full moon just a little, so I can better see my flashlight beams :D

No MBI flashdarks for the immediate future...

Re: MBI: "Thing" - My newest, top secret "the product with no name"

Update:

A critical part of Thing-O landed Friday after some minor drama (shipped to the wrong address and had it re-routed just in the nick of time). It's the first version of it's kind for that part and the result is better than my best-case-scenario simulation. Awesome!!
Now I totally love these things, x10 :D

The new machined samples for these are due to land ~48hrs from now.
The new PCBs, all going well perhaps around end of this week (my official target date is Nov 23rd).

I do need to confirm everything fits together as planned and then I can give the final go ahead for the beta run quantity of machined parts.

So far, still on schedule. Keeping my fingers crossed and my mind calm (as calm as is feasible).

Now I know what it is ;)

LOL thanks Glenn7,
beautiful!! It's that exactly... (well maybe not quite exactly)...
I have always wanted titanium nails (and they double as cutters) and I'll bite'em less often

Seriously though, we used to have lot's of those way back when... not for nails but keychain attachments, that would light up or vibrate when any phone nearby received or made a call. I think they've been mostly forgotten but I always loved 'em.

I definitely need to get one for my dog, so when I want to see him in the dark, I just call him and he's all lit up (hope he doesn't freak out). I was going to get him a little something (doggy chewy things) for Christmas anywayz... now I think I'm gonna buy him a phone and then, get his nails done

Ha ha yes you have a good sense of humor [emoji106] and yes I remember the old phones with blinky antennas.
You have me intrigued about your light is there a waiting list for the impatient to go on?

Hi Glenn7,

For now, just posting "I'm in" in this thread is enough.

I'll likely have to limit the number on offer... unless I'm just so excited and impatient, that I decide to launch Thing-O (and maybe Thing-E) on IndieGogo directly, even before Thing-Ultimate is finished. (If I do so, the shipping time will be much faster than a typical campaign). A lot going on right now, in addition to my usual busy schedule.
Thinking out loud (as I type) somewhat...
The sensible thing to do might be to wait until I have Thing-Ultimate machined samples in hand and launch them all in one shot (if it were a CF / IndieGogo campaign that is).
Launching even the most modest of CF campaigns requires a fair amount of preparation if it's to be done well and I prefer to do things well.

I do also want to share Things with everyone sooner rather than later....
The main difference is a beta-thing run, will be a total lucky dip kind of scenario, as I won't announce what a thing is, you'll just have to wait and see what's in the post, but I can guarantee everyone will find use for their things.

Re: MBI: "Thing" - My newest, top secret "the product with no name"

Whilst on the subject of "things".....

In my spare time (a few seconds every other day :D) I have been working on as much as I can, at least things within my direct control.
One of those, was eventually bringing the MBI MatchBook to life.

There were some slight details that needed research to solve (My proto's used black markers for coloring which is not ultra-durable, magnets at the base needed securing, the matches cost ~$4each) and like most things, a spontaneous thought in the middle of the night (partly triggered by my working on "things") and I saw the light. I went ahead and ordered all the ingredients and found a way to make it all work (and look just the way I want) even without having to commit to a massive quantity.

I have enough inbound to make a handfull (or two) of sets (based on 8 matches a book).
That's all due in the next 7 days and I'll be very happy to post photos as soon as they are ready.

Re: MBI: "Thing" - My newest, top secret "the product with no name"

Wow, thanks so much for the interest.

O K, I'm going first here again. Please put me down for the MBI, Magically Built MatchBook!!!!
Zandar,
YOU are on a roll! No idea how you manage to post so quickly but congrats and thanks

Count me in! Very cool idea : )
Thanks Thud :)

Ok you win "I'm in"
Glenn7, the MBI way is that we all win, and thank you too ;)

Of course I'm in!
th8tredude,
Absolutely!! :D

Trust me when I say that these matchbox matchbooks are an absolute must have.
Thanks Alex,
btw, any missions headed this way?

Cute, I used to make may own to put in miniature pumpkin decorations.

IIRC, another CPF member made one to keep in his wallet.
Thanks LedTed ;)

I'm in for thing!
Hi transultimate,

Thank you too!!

YES,
I need a couple matchbooks
Uriah.... :D
With pleasure ;)

I definitely want a matchbook or two. What a great item to have on hand to give away as a gift.
Thanks NowIC,
Gotta say I just stuck these in my wallet way back when. Sometimes, usually I forget I even have them, but I've used them in non-critical emergencies... like when my HF-R found it's way off of my keychain, and I was in the car, these did the trick.
Not massively bright, but easily enough to see with (or be seen). If only Hansel and Gretel had a few of these!!

In also, I love anything Match but the books rock.

Thank you JJKTWO,
I love sending you anything Match :laughing:
Matchbook here too! :touche:
Thanks Str8stroke,
Welcome of course :)
I'm losing count now... Will get the first batch made up when everything is here and go from there.

I should mention that the plan is 7 Redheads, and 1 White. (for now only those two colors) in this first very very li'l test run.
After that, I can definitely offer more colors.

I'll probably do a matchbook too

Hi Tejasandre,

Thanks for posting and when your probably becomes a must, happy to oblige at that time.

Tgwnn

p.s. Wondering if I should move these MatchBook posts into a new thread? should I?

Re: MBI: "Thing" - My newest, top secret "the product with no name"

Thing-Update:

Thing-O machining parts looks like they will arrive tonight. Hope I catch the courier in time!!
Soon as I confirm those, I can give a go ahead for a beta-batch.

Electronics..PCBs, there was a very slight miss on the PCBs. One connection point (an irregular one on the side of the boards) was missed (not made) in fabrication. It's 2-3 days to remake those, which means PCBs would likely not arrive till late next week (component assembly time, etc) so.... I told them to assemble as is and I'll use a makeshift pad/contact on the test boards (not too big a deal, my very first version had no side pad/contact) to save time.
That means I should have them in hand by early next week at latest.

I mostly need to confirm the various versions of electronics rather than physical design, so a production batch should be here roughly the same time as beta-batch machined parts. I do need to verify form-factor of Thing-E, and whether its going to be produceable at any sort of scale but in a small number at least, hoping to offer a few.

So... Things are getting close now...

Ok ok must! Gimme! Gimme!

LOL,
converted & confirmed :D

Fortunately, the lead time on parts is for MatchBooks is looking like < 2weeks so if I need to order some more, it's doable.

Re: MBI: "Thing" - My newest, top secret "the product with no name"

Thanks for the update, Guy! Fingers crossed all is as hoped!

Thank you th8tredude,

Functionally, everything is definitely at a high enough level for a beta version and assuming no mess-ups, production worthy too.

Now it's only a matter of truly minor tweaks to squeeze every last bit of juice out and verify if I'll need to shave 0.2mm from a silicon part or not for a smoother install process.

A few little matchbooks for me. Perfect presents for the holidays. We need a modern day 'Matchi uri no Shoujo' desu ne?

Hi Mo,

Thanks. With pleasure.

Small big Update:

Thing-O machining samples arrived :twothumbs :twothumbs :twothumbs

The machining is perfect and looks good.
I might need to tweak a couple of dimensions by about a hairs width but oh so pleased to see this finally.

More news as soon as I have some.

You know its tiny when he states, "tweak a couple of dimensions by about a hairs width". Lovely lovely!

Tgwnn, I don't want to derail anything on Things thread, but is there seriously a chance you will make enough Matchbooks that we could have a actually change getting one? It seems there is some serious interest. Of course, don't stop working on a Thing to jump on them. :)
