Scotty is my favorite how to mechanic.

Regarding the Nio... stupid simple ideas that should change the game. Battery swap stations in the size of a Jiffy Lube? Heck yeah!! Hey Ford and GM, get your head outta your rear and build this kinda cars. Now!

However, if the Nio cars are built by a communist country government owned facility sworn to over throw my country via a 100 year plan? Nope, not gonna buy one.

The media bias chart is your friend.
Your chart says I can trust an anti gun group like Bloomberg as neutral as well as NBC. NBC lost my trust and respect forever and earned my hate and distain with their reporting at Charlottesville. A madman plowed a car into a crowd of protesters. They reported showing a damaged car with a Christian liscense plate as if that was the car of the madman driver. It wasn't. It was just a car of someone who lived in the area that was a victim of the crime. With their horrible reporting, NBC put a target on the backs of all Christians. As a Christian myself, I was appalled and I will never forgive them for that. So don't tell me NBC is a reliable news source. I know better. Your media bias chart is biased in favor of the left.

Honestly, I think you're treading on material best discussed down below. My only responses are I never even heard of what you mentioned, and even if true, that chart is based on averages. Oh, and it's not MY chart. I have nothing to do with its creation. I've avoided NBC news and other regular news on my local channels for decades. Not because I feel it's biased, but because they present the content like the viewer is mentally challenged. And they have way too many commercials.

Why so much hate toward electric cars? Because they are still cars, and cars are part and parcel of everything that is wrong with humanity's relationship to the environment.

Personal mobility underlies and exacerbates almost all the most tenacious environmental challenges, including the consumption of energy in other forms.

The critical environmental damage done by cars is not caused by the fuel that they themselves consume…The critical damage is caused by all the other consumption that driving fosters—consumption that would not occur on the same scale if drivers couldn't move around as easily as they do.

The major carbon-spewing energy drain in a sprawling American suburb isn't the car in the driveway; it's the driveway. That is, it's everything the car makes both possible and necessary: the oversized house, the three-bay garage, the manicured yard, the redundant utilities, the schools, the hospitals, the shopping malls, and all the other accoutrements of inefficient suburban living—none of which would exist on anything like the same scale if residents were less able to move around at will. Cars are consumption amplifiers; driving is the pump that enlarges the sprawl balloon."

-Excerpts from Chapter 11 of "The Conundrum", by David Owen (Riverhead, 2012)

Replacing fossil fuel powered cars with electric cars will not alleviate the largest impacts that driving has on the environment. In fact, EVs are likely to only exacerbate these impacts.

It just occurred to me that while firewood-powered steam cars were impractical 100 years ago because of difficulty with fine control of the burner to maintain boiler pressure it would probably be possible to make a steam-electric hybrid with a battery pack between the steam turbine and the electric motors that could deal with a firewood-powered boiler.

Then again I suppose as long as the burner was electrically controlled with fan-forced air you could probably get pretty fine control of temperature and pressure even without a hybrid solution.

Hmm...

Or you can build a wood gasifier, and run your car on the vapors. No need for a hybrid or electric car for that to work.

History of electric cars in America is actually rather surprising!

"Leather was the carbon fiber of the day".

I liked the comments about 15,000 of them running around New York City at the turn of the century, with "chargers all over the place".

Agreed, but that seems like such a hack (although in fairness it *was* a wartime hack and a pretty effective one at that).

I actually started thinking about what it would take for Europe to rapidly ramp up use of biomass to replace natural gas, since (a) most of the power generation fueled by gas uses steam anyways and (b) heat is heat, except to the extent that biomass doesn't lend itself to things like per-house water heaters and furnaces.

That got me thinking about producer gas as an intermediary (I read somewhere that parts of Hong Kong and the surrounding area still run on town gas generated from natural gas and naptha**), and that led to wondering whether a firewood fueled steam engine or a firewood fuelled gasifier + IC engine would be more efficient in a car... and that's how I ended up here.

~50% hydrogen in that town gas - there's your hydrogen economy right there :)

A thing called ESG score is playing a big part in that AZ. It's one reason some sectors of the world economy is in chaos right now. And one thing that will likely lead to further resentment of the electric car.

If the entire world went all electric for automobiles tomorrow the carbon footprint would shrink from a size 11 to a 10.5. Maybe a 10. Lots and lots and lots of life as we know it depends on fossil fuels, which btw does not result from every dinasaur on planet earth being herded to Saudi Arabia or the middle east, dying and becoming oil. But that's another story.

This was the closest thing I could find without a political spin. See, as ESG becomes more and more known there are lines being drawn, so information being put out there has begun to be said from a "perspective" of the writer be it for or against.

No comment from me, just FYI - but I'm sure you expected this and won't be surprised. Apparently it will arrive shortly in the Southern hemisphere.

At least here in America, positive incentives are used to get people to switch to electric vehicles. Bank Australia has decided to wage war on the poor, the Working class, and the Middle class. At least they're trying to be mostly all inclusive.

We've had our "positive incentives" before to get people to buy more fuel efficient cars. Remember Cash for Clunkers? Turn in a working car to scrap for a rebate check. Took a good chunk out of the used car market for people that couldn't afford anything else and drove up demand for all other cars increasing prices. China got cheap metal at pennies on the dollar, and the program costed taxpayers billions. Made it harder and more expensive to get a car. What people don't understand about high priced cars like electric vehicles is that people have to drive to work more hours in less fuel efficient cars longer to be able to afford a replacement that pollutes less. If you make the replacement more expensive, you prolong the time they drive a car that uses more fuel and pollutes more before the exchange takes place. This counters any gains you may have achieved from a lower polluting vehicle.

Going to have to build out the infrastructure once the grid capacity problem is mitigated.

Being a Swede, you know, the country that brought you ABBA and a stick so far up our arses a group of Swedes might as well be called Billy the Bookshelf, i can tell you how ****ed that situation is here now. We're currently the leading exporter of electricity in Europe, whilst also running an oil power plant due to not actually having enough domestic production. The country is divided into 4 main power areas, with it getting more expensive the further south you get due to most power production being up north and while we're supposed to have an even distribution of power production throughout the country we've cut down on stable production for years. It's been more popular to listen to little runts who go all around the world and saying "how dare you!" than to ensure stable power, leading to the situation we have now where it's not at all uncommon to reach 50 cent/KWh most of the day, before taxes and other fees. It's been projected that a regular house here might get an electric bill of $5000-7000 this winter due to that.

Say what you will about the future and all that stuff, but EVs aren't going to solve any of that, it'll just cause more of this instead in more places until the power production is made stable.
