Any other compulsive battery aligners here?

I also align batteries, and other things... We once built a deck. The only available screws to mount the top wood panels had slotted heads. By the end, all screw slots were parallel. :)

Restoring iTunes After Hard Drive Crash?

Here's the built-in (legal) behavior from Apple: 1) For stuff you bought from the iTunes store: If you hook up your iPhone or iPod touch with a freshly installed iTunes, during the sync iTunes will tell you that it has found bought items on the iPhone/iPod, and will copy them from the...

Flashlights in TV shows and movies (Part 4)

Re: Flashlight used by JJ Abrams in Star Trek. Make and model? Yup :D. Fox Mulder action figure with alien and flashlight (top right of the package). Strangely, the Scully-figures on this page have cell phones. All the Mulder ones have flashlights.

    RIP Steve Jobs

Obituary by Stephen Fry, Apple product user extraordinaire. He summarizes my feelings more eloquently than I ever could. I agree with everything written here.

    RIP Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs (Stanford Commencement Speech, 2005): "No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best...

I felt weird carrying a light last night...

Bringing a light and not needing it: All the time. Feeling weird about it: Never. Better to bring and not need, than need and not bring.

Flashlights in TV shows and movies (Part 4)

Depends on how you define "special". Most handheld lights from, oh, maybe 2000 are unmodified store-bought lights. Before that, usually modified to show up brighter. One popular mod was using a SF light inside a Maglight [sic]. Others were corded lights to a power outlet, either on the actors...

    LED Doorhandle

Check this out: http://elitechoice.org/2011/08/13/led-door-handle-concept-is-a-brilliant-idea-waiting-to-turn-into-reality/ Door handle that doubles (triples?) as a night light and take-off flashlight. Pretty nifty idea.

    So who's upgraded to Lion?

AFAIK, you can go directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Mostly the PowerPC only programs will not run. Use the System Information tool to see what you have that's still PowerPC only (in case you don't know: Apple Symbol:About This Mac:More Info..., then navigate to Software:Applications to get...

    Federal Police confiscated my flashlight

Same thing happened to me while going to the US embassy in Germany for a visa application. They had special shelves to store disallowed items. Had to leave my cell phone and my SF E1L. There was a longing stare at the light from the Marine when he gave the light back to me. "Cool light, man!"...

    So who's upgraded to Lion?

Upgraded yesterday, and I'm extremely happy. I's great. Just a few minor bugs here and there, but nothing to write about. Launchpad needs some work -- there are no options to sort the app icons besides moving them one by one. But maybe there's some automatic that learns my favorites. We'll see...

water pressure - random science question.

As far as pressure is concerned, spaceflight is much easier. Max pressure difference between inside and outside is 1 atmosphere for a spacecraft. Less if you use a oxygen only atmosphere, like they did on Apollo, or for the EVA suits now.

Foods you love that some people find disgusting

Matjes. These are young, 'virgin', herring partially fermented in a salt brine. Very popular in the Netherlands, northern Germany and Sweden. Most outsiders find them disgusting and call them 'rotten', which they most definitely are not. Yummy.

    Spotify

See, I don't think that matters. In my experience, what drives media sales is content and convenience. Quality and price are secondary parameters. Unless price and quality are not completely off track, they do not matter. They get trumped by content (the shop/service need to have the stuff I...
