Six protected 1850 cells in series?

Assuming protection mosfets are 20v or 30v rated: Six should be ok, 10 protected cells in series on the other hand would be :poof:

    Low pressure sodium?

could be good if you are completely color-blind. Really poor CRI reduces contrast and you need lot more light to be able to see as well as with white light source. Luckily lp-sodiums on streets are mostly replaced with hp-sodiums and mercury lamps.

LED vs Fluorescent vs Gas lanterns

Those 6" 4w T5 tubes are horribly inefficient. usually 25-35lm/w which is same as leds couple of years ago. Single XR-E Q5/R2 led outputs same or bigger amount of lumens with only 1.5W of power.

Build a headlamp to beat the 1200$ Lupine Betty? With Ostar 6 or EZ1000?

Damn. Now I understand why you norwegians beat finns in cross-country skiing. You train with 800kg battery pack! Thats like a small car. Insane! :D 1 kilogram or 1000grams sounds more reasonable. :) I would also recommend same as others, try if 700 lumens or so would be enough. Easier also to...

    Best metal for heatsinking?

In weight-limited applications aluminium is better than silver/copper. Btw. Heatpipes conduct heat wayyyyy better than any metal.

Output of a camera flash in lumens?

They give fiqure of 40lm/w http://www.strobelamps.com/faqs/default.asp 4800Ws tube (big studio strobe) with 1ms discharge gives out truly insane 200000000lm or 200 mega-lumens

Elly low voltage start up problems

There is a trick to modify Elly driverboard to start reliably every time with less than 0.8v input, all you need is NPN-transistor and one 1k resistor... ;) Connect NPN transistor parallei to Q1. It's very difficult if not impossible to manufacture mosfets with gate treshold voltages below 1v...

Destructive Incan Bulb Tests - Updated 8/27/2010 (Newer Info Added)

Re: Destructive Incan Bulb Tests How about 2 or 3 A123 cell lamp with boost converter to drive 35/50W IRC?

Why don't use flourescent ballast as current controller?

Its possible if you connect about 20-30 leds in series and drive them with rectified output of the ballast. Doesnt make sense even if its possible.

    G4 pin 35w 6v overdriven to 14.2v >8,000 lumens

Yea right, that would be 100lm/w :nana::party::whistle:

Where to buy transien voltage suppressor TVS?

Better yet: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Cat=655429;keywords=tvs Mikepl, we would need to know which driver you are using too be able to tell if its protected or not. Automotive power supply is _really_ nasty, infrequent spikes of +-120v with enough current to blow up...

Can a "special" 35w halogen "be as bright as a 50w halogen"?

How about laptop car power supplies? biggest are 120W, have selectable 15-16-17-18-19-20-22v output and and definetely smaller than car amp. Like these http://www.all-battery.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=102

    Yup, pretty impressive numbers.
