    They're definitely focused on hitting massive numbers lately (requiring stepdowns). No reason to think this would be any different. Hopefully there's a "high" mode that is sustainable for some length of time well above 3k lumens.

    Not a bad idea. A solarforce single cr123 host with a tape switch might be the way to go for this.... Would love a more purpose built housing that's even shorter than a single cr123, but my searching has turned up nothing so far.

    I'm just looking at the raw efficiency/performance graphs for the LEDs... it just looks to me like the XP-L is better all around. Hard to tell from the graph, but visually at 1.5A the XP-L looks to have about a 50lm advantage over the XM-L2.
