A three cell flashlight can use a 92 percent efficient switching buck driver, while a single cell light can only use a 70 percent efficient linear driver.

Technically not true. Every kind of switching regulator can work with 90+ efficiences. I personally built lot of buck´s and boost´s for our headlamps with variety of input/output voltages. Reasons why most manufacturers use linears in single cell flashlights are simplicity and prize.

Great, another cell format to change to. Of my larger lights I'm still on 14, 16, 17, and 18mm cells and haven't seen a need to change.

Doubt that the 4680 will be widespread enough to threaten the likes of 14500, 16/18650 (and its emerging rival 21700). Assuming it's at all available with the TSLA secret sauce that closes some of the gap between high-density and high-power chemistries.

I like to watch the progress of technology, but in a way I agree. My collection still caps off in battery size at 18650, exactly as it was 7 or 8 years ago; technically I have one 21700 torch, but that's my B01 bike headlight, and it has an 18650 in it because that's what Lumintop shipped it with.

In a similar vein, my phone is a Moto G5+, with a "paltry" 5 inch display. I was used to even smaller but had to upgrade (firmware and app compatibility reasons) and this was the cheapest model I could find with native 1080p screen res.

EDIT: Still want to see 46800 for lanterns, though. A single-cell option for long-sustained 360º lighting is a big win for me.

It's possible they've got a bespoke monolithic cell that's compatible with the space occupied by the 3x21700 carrier, however I've not been able to locate such a cell on the site. They do have a separate page for the explicitly 21700 Mach with ~half the runtime.
