How about a fancy Carbon Fiber cover that has actual feel to it.

You can actually see where i sanded through the layers..

I had a crazy idea passed by me from someone..
Dont remember who it was, But here goes...

It involves installing an Ipod Shuffle in place of the
card reader and usb port on the mini's. Since this thing
has a Li-Ion battery builtin, I can utilize the charging
that is builtin and charge the main battery with it..
That means the ipod would run directly from the big
battery in the light, Thus negating the need for the
tiny 150-200mA battery that it comes with.

Charging and Data storage will be handled by the
cable that comes with the ipod. It uses a regular
headphone style connector to charge/play.
And since the headphones that come with it provide
the buttons for playback and volume, The only switch
i need to install on the light would be the one
for on-off-shuffle control.
The light would function normally otherwise.

Is anyone interested in this idea?
I figured it would be about 150$ over the cost of the base price of the light.

Here are some internal pics of the shuffle

Shuffle2.jpg

of course this would be the 4Gb Version:
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

And the Specs of the Shuffle:
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/specs.html

Multiply the battery life by about 3x.. so this combo will play music for about 30hrs !!

I "Could" modifiy and existing light with this idea. But i would need
to purchase a Shuffle to play with first.. Any Guineapiggies out there?

Cincinnati area, but lots of travel
Robert,

When we talked on Saturday I said that you and I were our own worst enemies  on me getting my light - too many options! At the beginning and during the build - yesterday it was the 16 gb memory card upgrade from the 8 gb (but you don't have any right now - so I passed).

Now this! I have to pass! But you continue to tempt me....

I dont think bluetooth would work with a full metal body... But Carbon Fiber Might :p

I had a Carbon Fiber case on my iphone for a short while. The case had a large cut-out strategically placed around where the wifi antenna is located specifically to avoid interfering with the signal. (Which also somewhat defeated the purpose of the case, at least for one side of the phone.) Unfortunately, the gps stuff is apparently located on the opposite end of the phone, and there was clearly a very significant decrease in gps reception with the case on. I didn't ever try bluetooth when I was still using that case so I can't comment on it specifically, but it turns out the Carbon Fiber is at least electrically conductive enough to act like a faraday cage when you don't want it to.
Now on the other hand, if there's a viable workaround for stuffing bluetooth into a carbon fiber flashlight, I think I know who will be the one to figure out how to make it work.

Yes, Carbon Fiber does act like a faraday cage :mecry:
But, The workaround is in making a custom top cover
in which the bluetooth antenna is installed in the top.
A small channel is milled in the top of the cover and
then backfilled with norland or epoxy to seal it up.
Its pretty easy to doo  Or, I could just cast my
own CF covers with the antenna builtin :twothumbs

Ohh, Iconoclast.. Did you want me to leave the Brass screws in?

OR

The reglular stainless ones

On another note. I bought an ipod shuffle to play with :poof:
And 10 mins after i loaded some songs on it.... I ripped it apart!!

You can see a Chimera below it for comparison :naughty:
IMAG0566.jpg

I bought it to make sure it will work in the light. I will be using the light's
battery to power it. And a bonus is that the ipod will charge it too
The controls are located on the headphone cord. Still messin around with
integrating it into the light. Especially getting the off/shuffle/seq switch
to the outside without loosing the water-resistance ability of the light.

More details to come!!

Hey it looks like these are coming out awesome! I would still love to carve one for you if your interested. I saw one another knifemaker did some scraching and ano work on....I'll show you what a real carving can do for one of these!

To get a better tumbled finish you just need a bigger tumbler and more media, the more weight you have the better the finish will come out.It will also take less time to get a good finish. Also try the ceramic stones that look like what your using but are longer pieces. Also bead blast it first then tumble it, you get an even darker flat grey look depending on how long you leave it in. That McGizmo light pictured on page 8 I bet wat basted first then tumbled.

Looking great!
Matt
