FM, do you have any of the white plastic bits that the batteries fit into? I'd like to stiffen up the batteyr pack by placing 2 more of the white plastic holders on....

If these are not available seperately, you may consider making your own. You just need to get your hands on a cylinder of plastic about the same diameter as the FM ones. Slice it into slabs, and drill four holes (one small, three large). Use the adapter you have as a template.

Glue this in place with a hot-melt glue-gun. Job's a good 'un!

Re: 9AA to 3D and 6AA/6x14500 to 2D

Bushman, I've just had a little thought. Are you trying to reinforce the design for any particular reason, or are you trying something new?

I remember reading earlier that you were trying to stuff as many RCR123A cells into a Mag 6D. I've just got visions of you wanting these white retainers so you can machine your own centre bar to make an 18AA>6D adapter for your 6D. That would be very cool indeed (or positively scorching, in fact).

If I have planted seeds of wonder, just remember that it has to be a reworked design. You cannot just use 2x 9AA>2D adapters in parallel, because of the short-circuit risk.

Good luck

^ no, i'm trying to eliminate the battery twist as the tailcap is put on. As well i'm trying to stiffen up the battery carrier, for shock purposes (impact weapon)

I do have a battery carrier design i'm playing with, but its for a single RCR123 (detials soon).... ;)

Re: 9AA to 3D and 6AA/6x14500 to 2D

Ah yes, I had the twisting problem. I solved it by using a little blue threadlock on the thread of the carrier. I use the charging jack function, so I do not remove cells regularly. After the threadlock has set, it is strong enough to resist twisting against the force of screwing the tailcap. Make sure you use BLUE though, RED, and you will probably never get the cells out again.

Re: 9AA to 3D and 6AA/6x14500 to 2D

I want to make sure I understand these devices correctly.

A 9AA/3D holder, with 9 rechargeable AA batteries will properly fill the battery space in a Mag 3D?

Will it provide proper power for a Malkoff D-cell LED drop-in?

Specifically, what's the best charger?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 9AA to 3D and 6AA/6x14500 to 2D

Welcome to this thread donn,

The 9AA>3D holder offered here by FiveMega is wired in series, thus the output voltage is 9 x 1.2 volt = 10.8 volts. The Malkoff drop in only supports 2-4 alkaline cell configurations, giving a maximum input voltage of 4 x 1.5 volts = 6.0 volts. This is not suitable for use with the Malkoff. In fact, I know of no LED module that uses 10.8 volts. You would be better using 3x D cell NiMH cells.

However, with the addition of a glass window, metal reflector and a potted Welch-Allyn bulb, you have yourself a 'Mag-85'. Over 1200 lumens (at the bulb, ~750 out the front) of glorious incandescent goodness! To charge it, use the plug that Fivemega has provided, and ANY smart (delta-peak) charger capable of 9-cells in series. R/C car chargers tend to be ideal.

Hope that helps...

Thanks, Mike. That does help a great deal.

Are there AA holders which are wired in parallel? I'm looking for a way to substitute rechargeable AA cells for D cells in 3D Mag/Malkoff units.

The 6x14500 charger is wired in parallel, and I am certain that 14500 cells are identical in size to AAs. This holder would give you the configuration you desire. Just PM FiveMega to be sure...

Re: 9AA to 3D and 6AA/6x14500 to 2D

Wouldn't I be losing a lot of runtime by using 350mAh 14500's instead of 2,000_mAh AA's?

This is not quite what I was suggesting. If you were to buy the 9x14500>3D adapter, this is wired in parallel, i.e. 3 x V-batt. If you were to use NiMH batteries instead, at 2000 mAh each, being wired in parallel gives the equivalent of 6000mAh performance, at 3x 1.2v = 3.6 volts. That would work. It is not what it was designed for, but it would work well in your modification.

Gotcha on the holder. Buy a 9x14500 holder and put AA's in it.

I'll have to spend some time at BatteryU, because I would think 9x 2,000mAh cells would combine to 18,000mAh, either in series or parallel.

I've PM'd FM, and will see what he has to say. In the meantime, I'm considering popping for the new 10,000mAh LDS D cells and a charger which will handle them. I figure 50 cycles or fewer will pay for the equipment and cells.

When you put cells in series, add up their voltages. When they are in parallel, add up their capacities.

In the abovementioned holder, you will have three parallel stacks of three cells each, so you get both three times the capacity and three times the voltage of a single cell. Thus 3.6 V and 6000 mAh, like MikeSalt already said.

(Btw, according to this thread, low self-discharge D-cells now exist, so you might be better off with those.)

Sorry, I was a little unclear here. The 9x14500>3D adapters are a MIXTURE of series and parallel. Each three cells are in parallel, but each group of three is wired in series to the next group.

With 2000mAh AAs, that would give you a total pack voltage of 3.6 volts, with 6,000mAh equivalent capacity.

Hope that clears it up...

Mike

EDIT: OH PANTS! I've just realised that FiveMega is not offering the 9x14500>3D I describe. I got it confused with the 6x14500>2D adapters. Unless the 9x14500 adapters come soon, then you are probably better using those 10,000mAh LSD D-cells. Sorry
