I don't think the XPG2 can take the current that the VN Mod is delivering. The XM-L2 may be brighter at higher amperage. I have read that the XPG2 tops out at 5A on copper and looses brightness and color tint above that. I believe the XM-L2 keeps getting brighter until it burns out!

I think you mean you ARE taking light #2, AND #3, and that the rest of the line needs to shift down a number.

By the way, it would be interesting to know the drive current into the led at different levels. Also, which batteries are recommended to get the maximum output? Would any protected Panasonic 3400 mAh be fine?
