Hello fellow CPF'ers --

I've noticed that Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries,
size AA (L91), and size AAA (L92)

are no longer Made In USA.

Now their packaging states:

Made In Singapore

( in VERY tiny printing . . . . )

My displeasure from this revolves around
my concern that Product Quality may be affected.
:sigh:

Tried called the Toll-Free number on the package,
but (alas), everyone had gone home for the day .

:ohgeez:

Nothing wrong with Singapore, they're one of the most advanced and business-savvy countries in the world. I'd wager they could manage not only manufacture but some very productive R&D if they were asked to.

I have no idea why folks worry about where stuff is made,a recent post was full of negativity about Eneloop being made in another country. The Singapore peeps are tech savvy like a member has pointed out.

Lots of westerners have a distaste for manufacturing in places like Singapore and China vs, say, Japan, the EU, or the US. I think this has less to do with the belief that products manufactured there are necessarily inferior (although there can certainly be quality issues), and more to do with a general distaste for supporting unsavory regimes by buying products made there. The people of Singapore are certainly educated and competent enough. But let's face it. Moving manufacturing to Singapore means that, by buying products manufactured there, you are supporting a dictatorship.

My concern here is about * CHANGE *.

Not the politics of which country they are made in.

The fact Energizer * CHANGED * the plant location
just automatically makes me wonder why ?

And, of course . . . .

I'm willing to bet the * ANSWER * to my question is :

< wait for it >

.
.
.
.

MONEY !

< wink >

In my experience, the best cells are made in Japan and USA. I would expect a decline in quality, but maybe not.

They cost about $4-$5 each around here, and the only reason I have a bunch is for emergencies... (10 year shelf life).

Okay -- quick update . . . .

Just got off the telephone with a very nice lady
from Energizer customer support.

She told me the batteries are *NO LONGER* made in USA,
and are *ONLY* made in Singapore !

Just FYI

Why do you expect a decline in quality? Brand names are worth billions and no one gives outsource contracts to any company that may jeopardise a major brand name.

Please see my " updated " info in post # 10.

It has now been confirmed by Energizer
that all USA production of these batteries has ceased.

The ONLY AA & AAA Ultimate Lithium battery
production is now in Singapore.

( this info directly from Energizer customer service, 9/03/2014 )

10 posts having nothing to do with battery manufacturing have been deleted.
Please stay on-topic for this thread, thank you.

A minor re-direction here,
because I don't want to start a whole new thread . . . .

My local Kroger Supermarket (Midwest USA)
no longer stocks Energizer 1.5 volt Lithium batteries
( size AA and AAA ) on the store shelves.

You now must go to their Customer Service Desk,
and * ASK * for them ! ! !
:(

I asked the nice lady * WHY * this change,
but she didn't know ANYTHING . . . .

If i had to GUESS,
perhaps this is related to illegal production of Chrystal Meth ? ? ?

Anybody ELSE notice this change anywhere ? ? ?

Considering the cost of Ultimate Lithium batteries I would expect a shop lifting problem as the most likely cause for Kroger to do that. At least one local supermarket has all batteries in a manned area of the store. As for Singapore production Singapore was a high tech electronics manufacturer for HP and other companies for a long time until they found cheaper sources in China but is still preferred by companies who choose to not deal with China and it's government, Shimano for one. It would not surprise me if Energizer totally owns and controls the Singapore battery plant.

Just sorry to see more USA manufacturing jobs leave which presumably means more layoffs and people forced into lower paying jobs. At least in the USA there is minimal competition for Energizer in this battery chemistry area which I find surprising.

No clue, batteries are out in the open here in SoCal as you'd expect anywhere else; razor blades aren't, cold medicine isn't, baby formula isn't, but batteries are fine..

could be environmental regulations here got to be too onerous.
lots of things move offshore and eliminate jobs due to crazy regulations.
i guess its time to test these new cells.
