Flashlight Recommendation Checklist - Updated MK II

In light recharging capability should be added to the list in its own category since that can have a few different options of its own. The Olight R40 Seeker is designed to be primarily recharged in light whereas the Nitecore TM 26 is designed to be secondarily recharged in light. There might be other lights that have that option only for infrequent emergency use only.

Not having this option is a deal breaker for most enlightened career driver's ranging from police officers to 18 wheeler drivers. It should be on the checklist.

I don't agree that the TM26 battery charging while inside the light is the secondary method for charging.

The light isn't sold by Nitecore with batteries. Unlike the TM36, you've got the option to purchase and use any button topped protected 18650 cell your heart desires.

Per the TM26 manual, and I quote:
"Charging the TM26
1. Connect the charging cable to the flashlight and the A/C power adapter to
the wall outlet as shown in the adjacent image. Fully charging four depleted
18650 batteries takes approximately 7 hours."

Those that are into typically "into" lights have a few sets of 18650 batteries and as such have other options for charging. Nitecore does offer a 12 volt accessory charging cord for those times when you need to charge from a vehicle.

Hi and welcome to the forums! :)

So if you fill out this checklist, you will get a lot more responses as it helps people make suggestions to best fit what you are looking for (just copy and paste it into your thread):

There are a lot of compact lights that are fairly bright, but keep in mind the smaller the light and the brighter it is, the less runtime it will have. :)
A checklist like that is like an SAT test. Best quick description. 3 setting light in the 4 inch range capable of longer runtime say on medium. (Rechargeables ok). Metal belt clip. 20 foot light range but very bright on high setting. Just a few to look at for ideas. $50. - $100. Is ok. I'll hit the Sports Store & check out some brand name suggestions. Throw a few names at me to check out. Fenix, Four 7. etc. Whats your fave? Hows that? Thanks! Appreciate it!

Thanks Norm. As with Ham Radios, Scanners and other gadgets, seeing and trying them out 4 yourself is the best way to decide. "4 anything" But having the experience with them is reason for the questions in the first place. Its uderstood being an engineer. It is in fact just a flashlight. I'm tearing open walls in subway trains and & looking at components, welding, & wiring. I could get away with the flashlight on my cell phone in a pinch. Ive used a $6.- maglight many times before. I just wanted to go all out this time. I appreciate all your time guys. If I have a half hour or so to kill, I'll see if I can fill out the checklist. Thanks so much for your time & have a great week! ☺

This is a great shopping/questions list. Thanks for creating this.

i'm tired of buying cheap lights at the hardware store or Amazon that don't seem to last very long nor put out a lot of light.

I'm looking for something very bright for occasional use on my rental properties within the city. Sometimes I find myself having to walk around outside at night to check on things, as well as in basements when the power's out. Having the strobe option for safety/protection would be desirable. I would plan to use it maybe once a week on average at most. I think I would like something with at least 900 lm, settings to adjust the brightness, and something that is rechargeable or uses rechargeable batteries or is plug-in and friendly for days or weeks of downtime without being used. I'll answer some questions below, I really appreciate any input and advice. Thanks!

Although I do not own one, it sounds like the Nitecore MH20 would fit the bill. I would buy the neutral-white model myself, but emitter tint is a personal choice. Check out the review by CPF member selfbuilt.

A small negative about the MH20 is that medium mode is much brighter that it is supposed to be. It is rated at 50 lumens, but selfbuilt measured it something like 125. That means there is a gap in the modes of the MH20. It would be nice to have a medium that is below 100 lumens, just so the battery would last longer, if for no other reason.

Be careful about storing Li-ion batteries in your glove box. The top of a glove box is one of the hottest places in a car. Low in the center console or trunk is generally better, but Li-ion does not age well in a hot car. For long-term storage in a car, most CPF members recommend lithium primary batteries.

Unfortunately, as you can see in selfbuilt's review, the turbo mode of the MH20 does not work well on CR123A lithium primary batteries. It pulled more amperage than the batteries could supply, eventual causing the PTC protection on the batteries to kick in. If, however, you stay away from turbo mode, CR123A work fine. All the other modes work perfectly.

Thanks! I really would like to have a reliable turbo/1000 option though. The EC4S may be more than I need but might be worth a look.

Flood or Wide Throw, Compact Size

Deleted and moved.

Hello Ze,
Thanks for the post! A great way to get to the bottom of what people need. Its also a great way to introduce folks who have only seen hardware store lights to the world of flashlight options. I see this as a mini crash course in the world of flashlight options. Before I found CPF and BLF I thought my mini mag was the pinnacle of EDC lights!

Since you asked for suggestions here are a few:

What flashlights have you used?

A section that lists what flashlights the person already has helps to establish the users reference points in terms of output, features, range, size, weight and newbieness, etc. Forms a basis for comparison.

Light levels available in the light:
i.e." moonlight to supernova and everything in between or just supernova" Introduces the infinitely dimmable to folks who think a flashlight is either "On or Off"
Also can be used to introduce UI and the range of programmable options Ie "Toykeepers Bistro"

Color temperature:
Cool, Neutral or Warm?
A bit about Kelvin and the range of colors and applications in the case of LED's etc
i.e."for photography use neutral LED's ~4000K"
"for max throw, stick with the cool LED's"

Is it possible to remove the 'Searching from a Helicopter' quote in question 9A?

It causes unnecessary confusion because in reality nobody is going to search from a helicopter with a handheld flashlight.

Having spent 10 years as a Tactical Flight Officer on a Police Air Support Unit I feel qualified to state that even a 30 million candle power search light, fitted to the aircraft, is not an effective search tool.

Thanks.

Depends on how close you are to the ground

My EDC is the Zebralight SC600w Mk IV Plus. Of all the flashlights I have ever owned this is by far the best. battery life is decent. Enough throw for anything I need. Color rendering is decent. I work for the railroad and it has never let me down. I also use it for hiking as well as lighting subjects for my youtube channel.
