Hello everyone, and thanks for reading. I'm on the hunt for a good flashlight for patrol, and was hoping for some help. I've been doing research for hours, but instead of narrowing it down, I can only seem to find even more options. The key things that I was hoping to find were: 1. A 1 or 2 18650 battery flashlight. I wasn't excited about having a proprietary battery like streamlights and 2. I wanted both a tailcap switch and a switch towards the front on the side. The dual switch isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but I found that pulling a 2x 18650 flashlight out of my pocket requires me to readjust it in my hand to reach the tailcap button, which really slows me down.

I'm not sure if this light exists, but I was hoping you'd be able to tell me. I'd love it to be dependable too. I'd rather spend more money making sure it'll work every time than on a few extra lumens

Lastly, Most of the 18650 flashlights seem to be centered around throw. Mostly I"m illuminating close up- cars, people, probably 21-50 feet average. Occasionally, I'll be searching for someone or something at a long distance, but throw is not really my primary concern. I'd like it to be bright, but have multiple power modes (and memory for the next time I switch it on) so I"m not blinding myself on a white wall in a room by accident, and can do low light stuff like writing.

I'll post the checklist too. Thanks for any help!

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

This will be mail-order or Online (location doesn't matter).

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I don't know yet
____Up to $25.
____Up to $50.
____Up to $100.
__X__Up to $200.
____Up to $300.
____Essentially unlimited.

3) Format:

____I am not sure, please help me decide.
__X__I want a flashlight (hand held/self contained).
____I want a self-contained headlamp.
____I want a headlamp with an external pack/power source.
____I want a mounted light (typically for a bicycle or vehicle)
____I want a lantern/area light.
____I want a portable spotlight (it may have an external power source).
____Other ____________________________________________

4) Size:

____MICRO - Keychain size.
____TINY - Every day carry (2-4 inches).
____SMALL - Every day carry (4-7 inches).
__X__MEDIUM - Holster/belt ring carry. (>7 inches)
____LARGE - Big enough to need its own travel case.
____I don't know/I don't care.

5) Emitter/Light source:

__x__LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

__x__I want to buy a light from a large/traditional manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
____I would like a light from a specialty manufacturer (Possibly limited run/Custom).
____I am interested in assembling my own components. (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source).

7) What power source do you want to use?

____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Alkaline batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
____I intend to use "Primary"/Disposable Lithium batteries based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D and CR123 sized cells common to most stores (often a cold weather or long storage choice).
____I intend to use Rechargeable cells (NiMH or NiCD) based on the usual AAA/AA/C/D sized cells common to most stores.
__x__I intend to use Rechargeable cells based on less common formats (18500 or 18650 Li-Ion, RCR123, et-al).
____I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery pack.
____I don't know/I need more information on power sources.

7a) If you have selected a rechargeable option
____I want a light that plugs directly into the wall (literally with prongs built into the light)
____I want a light that has a recharging adapter (your typical "wall wart")
____I want a light that snaps into a cradle (usually mounted on a wall)
____I want a separate/stand-alone charger (this involves removing the batteries to charge)
__x__I don't care

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is not a happy experience).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (1-10 lumens).
____I want an indoor "blackout" light (15-50 lumens)
____I want to confidently walk around an unlit/unpaved rural area (60-150 lumens).
__x__I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
__x__I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
__x__I want search and rescue type illumination (800+ lumens).

_x___SPECIAL NOTE: Burst/Turbo mode Category - There are several lights that will run at a super bright maximum for a very limited period (usually 5-10 minutes) and then will "step-down" to a lower level for thermal control. Check here if this is acceptable.

9) Flood vs Throw: Flood covers an area, Throw reaches out to a distance.

____All Flood: I am doing "arms length" tasks like reading and campsite cooking.
____Wide Flood: I want a defined flood area for semi-close tasks like after-dark campsite tasks or working on a car.
____Narrow Flood: I want a sharply defined flood area that will project some distance for tasks like trail walking.
__x__Wide Throw: I want a beam with a noticeable hot-center for distance throw and a significant amount of "side-spill". Good for rough trail hiking, search and rescue, and general distance work.
____Narrow Throw: I want a beam with a very tight "hot center" and minimal "side-spill". Good for distance viewing, fog, and looking through dense undergrowth.
____Turbohead: I want a far-distance projector with a sharply focused spot of light and minimal or zero side-spill. Good for extreme distance and impressing your friends.

9a) Distance: How far away will you typically need to see with this light (check all that apply)
____Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
__x__Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
_x___5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
__x__30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
____50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I am searching from a helicopter)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum continuous output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
____30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
__x__90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
__x__3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
__x__Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't know.

12) Switch Size, Type, and location (choose all that apply):

____Any size switch will do.
__x__I need a BIG switch (I'll be using gloves or have very large hands or coordination issues).
__x__I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
__x__I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
__x__I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
__x__I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
____I want a remote switch (usually found on high-end bicycle headlights)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________________.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
_x___I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
___x_I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
____I want a strobe mode. (Oscillating pattern to confuse/blind aka "Police Mode")
____I want SOS mode. (blinks in ---...--- emergency pattern)
____I want a beacon mode. (Regular flashes at full power to show location.)
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's higher end flashlights).
____Stainless steel (durable, but much heavier than aluminum)
____Titanium (durable and nearly as lightweight as aluminum, but can be moderately to significantly more expensive).
____I don't care.
__x__I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________.

15) Water resistance
____None needed
__x__IPX4 (Splash resistant)
____IPX7 (Waterproof to 1 meter/30min)
____IPX8 (Submersible to greater than 1 meter for 4 hours)

16) Storage conditions
_x___In house (temperature/climate controlled environment)
____Emergency kit (long standby periods)
____Automobile glove-box (wide temperature swings, long standby periods, critical reliability)
____Other________________________________________ ____

17) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any/all below.

____Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Pocket/belt clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking, Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your help and look forward to your suggestions!

Nitecore EC4S or a Nitecore SRT7. If you want small for the front pocket, then a JETBeam RRT0SE.

I just bought a Fenix UC35 and love it. I am new to the world of flashlights so I may not be right on target but I believe it would work well for you. This is the rechargeable model of the PD35 so either one would work, just depends on your preference of rechargeable or not.

Malkoff MD2 turnkey with a hi/lo ring. Twist the head for low or high.

Or a Malkoff MDC. You can get one that starts on high or low. You pick.

Check out Malkoff Devices sight.
Gene Malkoff builds them himself with law enforcement and soldiers in mind.

Send him an email with what you'd prefer and he'll hook you up with what you need....other than a side switch. He doesn't make lights with side switches, but his tail switches are thumb size and easy to press gloves and all.

He ships 2-3 day priority and each comes with a hand written thank you from his wife.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I just put in an order for the Nitecore STR7. I had not come across that light before, so I think the features it has should be very useful.

I am also looking into the other lights too, specifically the Malkoff flashlights as a backup.

Look at either the Fenix TK35UE or the Nitecore P36. 1800-2000 lumens on turbo, wide area coverage with enough hot spot to be useful. Uses two 18650 batteries for good run time.

I think you will like the SRT-7. I just picked one up, and it is pretty nice. I'm impressed, but I have not run it through its paces yet.

Back in the day, when I was paying for my flight time, I was a full time LEO for 10+ years and then in the reserves for another 15 while flying at the same time. I've been around the block a few times, including a stint on a S.W.A.T. team. So...

The SRT-7 is a great light. IMHO, the best thing about carrying something like a Streamlight SL-20, is that it can be used as a formidable extension of your arm if needed, and the fact that charger sleeves are found in so many areas of the local PD/SO offices and vehicles. There is almost always an SL charger around somewhere. You might consider picking up one of these also. The SRT-7 is a VERY versatile light though. I wish this technology had been around back in my door kicking days. All we had were Streamlight, Maglite, and later Surefire.

FYI: My last SL-20 stayed operational for 20+ years with only 3-4 battery changes, and NO bulb replacements. Now they even make them in LED... Dang, I really missed out.

BEST piece of advice, get a second SMALL light. Something like the tried and true Surefire 6p. My original issue Surefire 2 x CR123 issued in 1991 is STILL WORKING ON IT'S ORIGINAL BULB. Keep this second light on your duty belt at all times. Even working day shift, you never know when you will have to clear a dark building and need the light. If you are not expecting to need a light and leave the big one in the patrol car, the little one will ALWAYS be with you. It also functions as a back-up should your primary light fail.

Always carry a second light, and a nice tactical knife if your departments SOP will allow it. STAY SAFE!

See if the updated (2016 version) of the Fenix PD32 interests you... It should start shipping in a week or two..

First off, Welcome to the Forum! :welcome:

Elzetta Alpha! Designed for heavy duty use. 1 CR123A cell. Flood lens. Simple design and use. Bombproof.

Elzetta Bravo! Same as above. They fit a 16650 cell, or can run 2 x CR123A cells. Get the AVS head, smooth bezel, High/low tailcap, with the Flood lens. They don't get much better than this.

Malkoff MD2 light. Fit an 18650 cell or 2 x CR123A cells. Multiple drop in options depending on your tint preference.

To the folks who recommended lights other than Surefire, Malkoff, or Elzetta, would you guys have enough trust in your own recommendations if your life depended on them?

Well as I stated in my post I am new to this world of flashlights so my post to look at a Fenix is from a novice, believe I said that in my post as well.

And that's fine. I'm not being critical or trying to offend.
I just believe that requests from law enforcement officers, members of the military, and firefighters for recommendations of DUTY lights should NOT be taken lightly, and most important of all, recommendations should NOT be given without the necessary product knowledge and user experience.

The Malkoff MD2 and Elzetta Bravo with M61 drop-in ar my top two choices for the intended usage. I've got multiples of both, and trust them completely. They are both available with high/low options, with low being 10-15 lumens.

The only other suitable light that I've personally used is the Foursevens Quark QT2L-X, but it's been discontinued. I've used mine quite a bit, but it hasn't been abused nearly as much as my EDC MD2, therefore it can be put in the maybe column. I don't recommend any light to anybody that I haven't owned, and I don't recommend any light to LE or Mil that hasn't spent time mounted to one of my full recoiling rifles (5.56 ARs don't qualify).

Tuned in to this thread. Currently carry a Streamlight Stinger DS LED HL. Has worked well for me this far for a Leo that works 12+ HR night shifts. By the end of the night, the stinger is on the edge of being dead, if not dead.

Doing some brief research I came across the Eagtac Sx25L2, SRT 7 to be highly recommended on here.

Any personal experience with the Nitecore MH41?

Some me of my coworkers have recommended the Surefire P1R Peacekeeper and R1 Lawman if you'd like to stay mainstream.

I completely agree with this. Fenix may not have the latest and greatest emitters and features but I would trust my life to them. The ones I have been dead reliable with no issues and my E21 has been through the ringer. Despite that though, I would still go with an Elzetta first just because they are made 45 mins from my house.
