My Machine shop often jokes that they can keep it in a foot or so one way or the other drive it in break it off and back it out 10 percent 

Race car mechanics often say, tighten it 'til it break and then back it off a quarter turn.
Race car designs save weight by removing stuff until the whole car falls apart and then they put back the last thing taken off.
