Both of the Li-ion battery protection circuit board and battery management system system play an important role in protecting the Li-ion battery. To know more about them, let's see the similarity, difference, usage of them below.

PCB (protection circuit board) or PCM (protection circuit module) is an important part on Li-ion batteries. It can protect the charging, discharging of the series and parallel Li-ion battery packs. At the same time, it will detect the over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, and short-circuit status of each single cell in the battery pack to protect, extend the battery's life.

The BMS is a set of electronics that monitors and manages all the Li-ion batteries' performance. It maintains the same features as a PCM and PCB, and more advanced, can offer extra protection for the battery. It's like the brain of the Li-ion battery, plays a controlling role. It could monitor the battery state, calculate secondary data, report that data, control its environment, and balance it. The BMS monitor the state of the battery as represented by various items - battery voltage, current, temperature, state of charge, state of health.

To choose a PCB or a BMS, it will depend on the type of the devices and level of security needed. PCB or PCM is usually used for small batteries with basic protections. Such as different digital batteries, like mobile phone battery, camera battery, GPS battery, also common 18650, 21700 Li-ion batteries. For bigger Li-ion battery packs in EVs, e-bikes, drones, smart battery chargers, a reliable BMS will be used to ensure its safety.
