2 Design
FF5GT is a high and low gear design, with 150W high grade and 50W low grade. It can be changed by pressing the side switch. There is a temperature control system inside. Once the temperature control takes effect, it will automatically jump and lock at 50W;



My opinion on this,
I like that Firefix is still in the game. I am torn about buying this. the first one is its $373 with the 15% discount and its not a redesigned body. I was really hoping for a super big refector to really focus 15k lumens. put this is a lemax LX70 super refector and your easily getting over 5mcd. but becasue is the same refector as the ff5 its only going to do 1.5mcd ish.

I came here to post exactly this. Wow. 150w hid. It's got me wondering about three things. Is the bulb upgraded to handle the 50٪؜ increase in wattage? Are the 4 18650 cells (same as previous models) able to handle that much load? Is the battery carrier capable of handling that power?

That would be about a 10 Amp load based on 3.7 x 4 cells in-Series = 14.8 Nominal Volts. 150 Watts / 14.8 = 10 Amps. Plenty of 15 - 30 Amp capable cells out there so that's not a problem.

As much of a fan of FireFoxes as I am, I do have to say I'm also somewhat disappointed that there isn't any differentiation between this and the FF5 besides the increase in output. It makes me wonder if they're just driving the ballast harder but didn't improve on any of the other components. That would be a less than ideal situation. At least they could have made it 3 speed to further differentiate it.

Having said that, I still might get it. Lol!

If refering to the Short Arc version, this was a year back or so and the ballast or lamp failed after 2 or 3 ignitions and short runs. so no chance to do any evaluation.

here is a link comparing the short arc version to the normal version of the ff5. I dont understand why they dont just stick with and make the short arc version better. it has a better beam and more throw. less output but also less heat. although 15k lumens will be quite impressive for its size with the gt. the throw difference does not look huge

I am somewhat disappointed. While there us a noticed increase in output and throw its minor. Ceiling bounce tells all. 600lux for FF5 and 660lux with FF5gt. Thats only a 10% increase. I used vtc5 fully charged in FF5gt and molicel p26a in the FF5 but they were under 4v. I have brand new molicel being delivered today so I'll test thoes later but as of now it's not worth the upgrade imo. It just gets hotter faster with just maybe a 1100 lumen increase.

The quality is a mixed bag. The reflector is way way better quality. The ff5 you can see the machining ripples. The reflector in the ff5gt is stunning. Very smooth and shinny. The one downgrade is the lack of square threads on the ff5gt. The are just standard threads now. They dont feel as smooth but I have to clean the threads and orings and re lube to compare better.

I'm surprised you received it so quickly. If these results are accurate, then that is a real disappointment. I'm hoping that's not the case and that this is just an outlier. Have you contacted Neal to see if this could be a defect or something?

dont take these results as gospel am going to do more tests tonight when i get home. I am at work atm and dont have the best area to test. might have to wait till tomorrow. tonight i have to charge 12 new molicel P28A cells. thats going to take a while to charge them. all my other cells are kinda old. if i get repeat results ill contact Neal.

Ok so I just did lux measurements at 10m I am getting 1.36 mcd with the FF5 and 1.42 mcd with the FF5Gt using fully charged vtc5 for both. They honestly look very similar. Looks like maybe my regular FF5 is an exceptional sample at least for throw because thats definitely over spec for distance. if you look at beam distance the FF5gt is rated at 1.2 -1.45mcd and I'm right below the higher range.


Now in terms of lumen things get odd. I have an led light I know the known lumen of. The XT60vn. It does 9150 lumens at turn on. I did a double bounce ceiling bounce test. I did this because the reflection off the much brighter hot spot of the Hid lights would bloat the lux numbers vs the floody XT60vn.

I got 41 lux with the XT60vn
I got 44 lux with the FF5 (7.5% increase)
I got 51 lux with the FF5GT(25% increase)

If you calculate the increase of lumen of the hids based off the 9150 lumens of the XT60VN then you get.

9,836 lumens on the FF5
11,437 lumens on the FF5GT

That's 1,601 lumens more or about 16.5% more output.

Definitely not a 5000 lumen increase but I guess it's better then nothing.

I will retest with my new molicel p28a when there fully charged. I can't imagine it will be that different but maybe they can push the GT harder who knows.

Keep in mind this is no perfect test but it gives an idea. All numbers are relative so you can't compare to other people's measurements.

No difference with the molicel batteries. About the same results.
