In addition to the Tool 2.0, I'd also give him a Nitecore Tube on a lanyard.
I checked out the Tube, and it looks good (though more like a primitive bug than a tube). The reviews on Amazon show many unhappy people, though, who said it was not durable and failed in less than a year, all pointing to a wire breaking off the board.

I have a Photon II that has been rattling around on my keychain for more than 15 years, never a problem. Not as versatile a light, however.

Yes, the Utorch UT01 is a nice 1AA light to consider.

The Coast HX5 focusing 1xAA light is my most used light.

The Factor Equipment 1AAA is only 30g with NiMh battery and has a fabulous two way clip that allows easy mount to hat brims. It's my most used 1AAA light and is waterproof to IPX8.

The Manker E02 right angle light is also an nice 1AAA light.

Late to the thread but in addition to the Tool maybe add a Pak-lite 4K. Improved tint over the original Pak-lite and really should last the whole trip on a single 9V. $20 and the cost of a spare 9V (just in case). The Pak-lite would give him a long running two level back-up and should be a decent little area light for use in tents and such.
