1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

____I would like to purchase the light from a brick and mortar store. I am located in ______________.
__x_I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____Less than $25.
____Less than $50.
__x_Less than $100.
____Less than $150.
____Less than $300.
____I have no limit.
__x_I'm flexible, tell me what you gotJ.
____Other, please specify ________

3) Format:

__x_I want a flashlight.
____I want a headlamp.
____I want a lantern.
____I want a dive light.
____I want a portable spotlight.

4) Flashlight-specific format/size:

____Keychain size.
____Every day carry small (2-4 inches).
____Every day carry medium (4-7 inches).
____Holster carry.
____Big enough to need its own travel caseJ.
____I don't care.
__x_I don't know.
____N/A

5) Emitter/Light source:

__x_LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

__x_I want to buy a light from a traditional mass producing manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
____I would consider getting a light that is pieced together (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source). Under the right circumstances, this path can provide more options to the consumer to meet specific needs, and can often be easily upgradeable as technology improves.

7) What battery type do you want to use?

____I intend to use alkaline batteries (AAA, AA, C, D) (disclaimer, while it does not preclude all choices, these are not recommended for many of today's most powerful lights)
____I intend to use rechargeable nickel chemistry (NiCad, NiMH, NiZn)
____I intend to use lithium primary batteries (CR123, CR2, Energizer Advanced/Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA)
__x_(prefer 18650/CR123A) I intend to use rechargeable lithium (li-ion) chemistry. Feel free to specify a size if you know which size you want (14500, RCR123/16340, 17500, 17670, 18650, etc.)
____I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery. (Note: these choices may be very limited unless you are looking at spotlights)

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (0-10 lumens).
____I want to walk around an unlit rural area (50-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
__x_I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
____I want ridiculous amounts of lumens (800+ lumens).

9) Throw vs. Flood: At what distance will you be most likely to use this light? Select all that apply.

____Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
____Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
____5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
____30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
____50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
__x_150+ yards (I want maximum throw possible)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
____30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
__x_90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
____3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
__x_Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

12) Switch Type and location (choose all that apply):

____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
__x_Other, please specify: I prefer to have a tail clicky with the option to add a tape switch.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

__x_A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
__x_I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
____I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
____I want a strobe mode. (Blinks to show location.)
____I want SOS mode.
____I want a beacon mode.
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's flashlights).
____Stainless steel (durable, but much heavier than aluminum)
____Titanium (durable and nearly as lightweight as aluminum, but can be moderately to significantly more expensive).
____I don't care.
__x_I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________.

15) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any below.

____Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Pocket/belt clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

I need it to be a 1" body to fit in a light mount. I also need suggestions for a light mount, I will have my left hand forward and have a magpul foregrip and a customizable rail. I prefer a lighter weight light, as my rifle is a lighter weight design. I need a rugged light that won't break down over time. I'm on my 3rd Foursevens light and I've had 2 of them break (both mini AA2) and now have a Quark AA2 Tactical.

I think a Surefire 6PX Pro or G2X Pro would fit your requirements. I still run a SF 951 incan on my AR, but it is probably heavier than you want.

I'd recommend the Surefire P2X-B-Bk. It has a 500 lumen high and a 15 lumen low. It's a little over your budget, but it'd be worth it since it's a Surefire.

I have an Olight M21-X (3 outputs settings - 20 lumens, 200 lumens, and 600 lumens), and really like it. It is under $100, and would serve you well. I wish I had known that the Surefire P2X-B-Bk was coming out though because I would have rather of gotten it. Surefire has a long history of making among the very best quality lights. If my Olight ever busts then I'd get the Surefire. But, the Olight has been working flawlessly, so really there are no complaints from me. I've had it mounted on my SU-16c for a few months without any issues. I bought an Olight gun mount for it (I believe it is .98" in diameter) which works great. You can also buy a tape switch for it as well.

Good Luck.

I purchased a 6PX Pro recently, great light. HOWEVER, package states that this light is NOT to be mounted on a weapon. I purchased this light to mount on my AR. I am contemplating returning this, never ever would have guessed this to be the case based on the reputation Surefire has had (emphasis on past tense!)

Holy crap....I didn't realize that. I am now not as interest in that light as I was a few minutes ago. Surefire announced at this years shot show that they had a lot of new lights with the latest LED's coming out (all at much better prices too.) I hope some of those that are yet to be released can ride on a gun.

Correct me if I'm wrong but won't something like the Jetbeam BC25 or the Eagletac T20C2 MkII give more light and a longer throw?

I like the Klarus XT11 for this purpose. 850 lumens on 2 RCR123's or 600 lumens on a single 18650...and it can also run on regular CR123's for brightness between those extremes (Triple fuel, lots of power options).

Weapon mountable, double sprung cell chamber to absorb recoil (AR15 recoil is so slight this is overkill).

Klarus has about the best pressure switch, in that you can not only turn it on/off, you can change the modes with it too.

It throws a floody beam similar in shape to the 500 Lumen SF Fury, but of course IS meant to be weapon mounted. Its great for target context/acquisition in that the field of view is large (You don't lose a moving target as you do with a smaller beam...where you are trying to find where it went while "looking through a paper towel tube", etc.)

With iron sights, you can hit targets out to ~ 100-150 yards depending on your eyes. With a good night scope, way further.

In my opinion, the interface of the P2X and G2X/6PX Pro is not suitable for use on a rifle, unless you're just shooting at paper or game. For one, it comes on in low first, It is also too easy to accidentally switch back to low once in the high mode. The only multi-level light that belongs on a rifle used for self defense would either have a two-stage switch like the Surefire LX2, or be adjustable by rotating the bezel or tailcap.

For a smart high/low interface, look at Elzetta's lights, which have a clicky tailcap that switches from high to low by twisting the tailcap; clicking the tailcap only turns the light off or on. For a single-mode alternative, consider a Surefire 6P with a Malkoff drop-in, which is actually the same drop-in that Elzetta uses. The Surefire Scout Light series is lower profile and more lightweight than the other two options I mentioned.

You didn't specify your intended use for the AR, but I would like to caution you that much more than 100 lumens is momentarily blinding to night-adapted vision indoors.

My AR is for outdoor shooting, I have a 12 gauge for my indoor protection. I want to be able to illuminate and identify a target out to 200 yards. I will have a 3x magnifier on an Aimpoint PRO. I also want the ability to shoot steel at those ranges as well in low light situations.

I've got a Klarus XT11 on my 300 Blackout. It's mounted with a Larue LT-707 QD mount. I haven't shot it at night yet but the hotspot seems like it should do a good job at 100+ yards and the spill does a nice job of lighting up stuff while walking around the house with the hotspot acting as a pretty good sight. 200 yards is quite a distance... you're probably going to be looking at bigger lights be able to identify targets at that range.
