My battery stick in my SL35X is dead. Is there a less expensive option other than buying the SL replacement battery?

One that will have the same
(or better)performance.

Will purchasing individual nicads have the
same performance or does it have to be
in a stick configuration?

I'm new to this battery thing.

Thanks!

Based on the information I have, you need to use 5 D-Cell NiCad batteries. There is no harm in using 5 individual cells versus the 'stick.' People have asked us this same question regarding the Mag rechargeable system. We carry the NiCad D-Cells for $6.97 each (http://www.zbattery.com/ncd4000d.html), so it works out to about the same price as a stick from the stores I saw that carried them online. I don't think you'll be able to save too much. You're probably better off going with the stick.

I hope this helps.

Thanks TBG, at approx. $7.00 ea. X 5 = $35.00.

A new battery stick is $55.00+.

So, I come out ahead of the game if I purchase the seperate nicads.

That is, if I can put my SL into it's existing charger with the new nicads.

Can I do that? Or, do I have to buy a seperate charger?

Thanks!

Joe, there is no reason why you should not be able to charge the new NiCads in your existing charger. The stick is nothing more than 5 batteries shrink-wrapped together for convenience. It makes a good selling point too.

I would check again online though. I found the stick for around $32 at a couple of places. Look at Google.com. Search for the battery part number.

I hope this helps.

Well, Bryon, I tried. I could not find generics anywhere. At least for the 35X.

Would you mind listing a few of the sites?

Thank you!

what makes you think it is dead?
charge it up and measure it.
should be 6.2-7.0 v
usually one cell dies and then peformance is poor.
if no light at all maybe the bulb or charger?
i service emergency gear here and always have streamlite/magcharger sticks labled bad come in.
policy is to replace if suspected by user.
90%are just fine on a cell grader.
make nice 3cell mag to roll your own magcharger wannabe

btw a stick pack is less likely to flicker when the light is shaken.
fewer contacts to give trouble.

Joe543,

I looked again online, and I think I was looking at the SL20X prices, but the even so, after shipping, the SL35X is only about $10-$15 more than buying the batteries loose and making your own pack.

kc8adu is also correct in noting that the potential for flickering is greater than if you had a stick.

Another advantage to the loose batteries though...if your pack goes 'dead' on you, you have to replace the whole thing. With the loose batteries you can single out the bad cell and replace it only.

In the end I think you'll have to weigh the positives and negatives of each case and determine yourself which one best suits your needs and expected usage.
