I was researching a product and I cant quite figure out what les they could possibly be using.

12 leds producing as much light as a 50W zenon. (They dont give lumen output however from my research I estimate a 50w zenon around 5000lm)

Drawing 1.8A from 12V supply.

????

Either its BS or im off on my estimate of a 50W zenon

any thoughts

1.8 Amps at 12 volts is 21.6 watts.

At 1.8 watts a Cree XPG-R5 will produce about 210 plus Lumens times 12 LEDs equals 2,500 Lumens.
State of the art currently available.

I assume we're talking about Xenon short-arc-HID and not Xenon / Halogen. The later is just a fancy way to describe a halogen / incan to make it sound cool.

I thought full spectrum Xenon short-arcs had about the same efficiency as metal halides given it's real similiar technology. 'Bout 60-80 lumens per watt.

While LEDs are more efficient, the reason Xenon short-arcs are still in use in things like motion picture projectors is they have a very long spectrum and high CRI.

Also, Phlatlight SSTs-90 are used in some theatrical lights rated at 60watts.

Xenon short arcs are in the neighborhood of 40 lm/W-link. So yes, 21.6 watts of LEDs could easily produce the same amount of light. The price you pay for this greater efficiency is of course lower CRI.

Okay so this makes sense. Either they are talking about a xenon/hid setupor I am way off on my 5000lm xenon / hid estimate..

either way I have a handle on what they are actually producing

well the mfg emailed me back and said the total Lumen output for each fixture is 1300. I guess they had to be talking about a a non HID xenon because I know an HID puts out way more than 1300lm

Funny how wording can make something seem so much better than it really is.

Last I checked, xenon wasn't a member of the halogens, so they're just trying to market the thing if they are saying it has the same output as a 50W xenon lamp...

Or perhaps their 50W xenon lamp is a cheap chinese 20,000k kit :green:

Halogen bulbs frequently contain Xenon gas (trace amounts), and marketing people have figured out this is a neat way to sell regular halogen bulbs at a different name.

Xenon 'arc' or Xenon HID is of course a different beast.

1300 Lumens / 12 LEDs = 110 Lumens at 1.8 Watts each.
That's 60 Lumens per one Watt.
The XPG LED at one Watt is 140 Lumens.

They use pretty cheap out of date LEDs in their product.
